My question is why?

While it's a good question I think the answer is obvious. For the same reason people climb really tall mountains or scale cliffs. Just to see if they can.

Why? To demonstrate that he can create a working firearm which would appear in no government database, and is not subject to confiscation. To show that he can, in anticipation of the day when he might have to be able to do it.
