December 3, 2016 Petraeus for Secretary of State Is a Bad Call By Rob Caskey

In the parade of prospective cabinet picks making their way to the penthouse of Trump Tower to meet with the president-elect, few have come with more pedigree or more (figurative) baggage than General David Petraeus. Tipped for the position of secretary of state, the retired four-star general is considered to bring with him a wealth of experience garnered from nearly 15 years in the higher echelons of the U.S. Army, including time spent at the helm of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as a stint as head of the CIA. But in his interview to become the nation's top diplomat, he likely had some awkward questions to answer regarding a scandal involving the sharing of state secrets with his biographer and paramour, Paula Broadwell.

At least he should have. But Donald Trump has been vocal in his defense of the general even though he was found guilty of the same crime committed by Hillary Clinton. Perhaps a more likely sticking point between Trump and Petraeus, however, will be their diverging views over the USA’s commitment to NATO and its continued expansion.

Granted, David Petraeus shot to prominence due to the successful counterinsurgency methods he employed as the commander of forces in Iraq that resulted in a substantial drop in violence. As the head of the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth two years prior to that, Petraeus wrote the military’s manual on counterinsurgency strategy.

(snip)

After serving as head of Central Command, Petraeus became the Director of the CIA, where he met his downfall after revelations of an affair with his biographer. ...

So why pick someone who, off the bat, has shown he has the ability to give away secrets for a night in bed?

Unfortunately, I think his mishandling of classified information is disqualifying.

I agree. So who is the best choice? Probably Rudy...but John Bolton would be good also.

As well as his gun control beliefs. All the bellyaching during the election about how out of 300 million+ people these are the only two candidates blah blah blah. Well, even though I wasn’t saying that then for President, at least on our side, I am saying that now for selecting a Secretary of State.

Whoever is selected as Sec. State will have to keep looking over their own shoulder. Their replacement will be sitting their waiting their tern at the reigns. This is why we have a fairly public interview process for various cabinet positions.

Being in the Trump cabinet will definitely not be a tenured position. No results, OUT YOU GO!

Instead of portfolio, its portrollio.

General David Petraeus is convicted of trading secrets for sex. It is a shame if he has any role whatsoever in Trump’s administration. Comparing to Clinton and others is wrong. Instead we should continue demanding similar justice for Clinton.

I can’t believe the man was even proposed for a cabinet position much less SOS

Who,on the trump team has sh!t for brains?

Tough enough to get a waiver for MadDog as SecDef and someone thinks putting another retired military man in as SOS was a good call?
Much less following hillarys horrible legacy with a man who was convicted of misusing classified information at the urgings of his penis

Starting to wonder about what is advising trump ...

Wasn’t so much giving away secrets for sex, as providing information for his biography to prove what a grand and decisive leader he was, ego gratification.

One doesn’t get to his position without being a adept at self-promoter as well as a skilled military leader.

Broadwell was there for the taking, and as Trump stated, star f***ers are there for the taking. Petraeus just “grabbed the pussy”.

Unfortunately the general was not sharp enough to see through the Democrat ruse of awarding him the CIA position, knowing the sexual indiscretion in his past would be exposed during confirmation thus eliminating him from a primary run against Hillary.

Petraeus did not sell secrets for sex.

What they nailed him on was trying to cover up for his girlfriend. The Obama Administration was trying (successfully) to destroy him, because he polled so high as a potential Republican presidential candidate.

His girlfriend while he was deployed was Paula Broadwell, a commissioned US Army officer with a Top Secret Clearance - a West Point graduate, and by any account a loyal American with no connection to any foreign intelligence service. She herself was a Military Intelligence officer by branch, who had been polygraphed.

As the wartime commander in the theater, GEN Petraeus was authorized to grant her (or anyone else he deemed) access to any level of classified information.

Yes, he was banging her. They were both deployed for long periods of time, and people hook up - and that was the soft point that the left used to take him out. He tried to cover up for his girlfriend (and himself), who they were threatening with jail and ruin, by misleading the FBI. That is why he was legally punished (ruined). As per the left’s standard operating procedure, he was then demonized in the press for unjustified allegations, exaggerating his offenses.

It is a very different thing for someone to try to cover up for a family member or loved one out of loyalty, than it is for someone to disloyally sell out their countries secrets. To reiterate, no US secrets were compromised - he only discussed them with a single trustworthy American, and let her read from his personal notebook, to give her the true context as she was writing the history of his role in the war.

Oh, P.S.

Petraeus did not even lie to the FBI - he just did not volunteer his personal notebooks to them, after Obama turned on him.

He is anti-Second Amendment. That means he is not upholding the oath he took to defend the Constitution of the United Sates of America. That alone should disqualify him and remove him from any further consideration.

When did mishandling classified information become a requirement to be posted as Sack of Sh.. Secretary of State?

That asshole should be cellies with Hildog in Supermax.......just the two of them, some prison shanks, and speakers that play 0's greatest speeches in perpetuity.

It's a problem that fixes itself.
