Another consideration is availability of ammo. That Arisaka or Krag might not be any more useful than a bayonet holder.

My rule of thumb is 1000 rounds per gun. That’s a basic load that you never go below. Build from there.

Glad you asked, as it made me consider my inventory.
I have enough self defense ammo and weapons and back ups, but, look like my hunting inventory could use a little back up.

It depends on what you plan on using that particular firearm for. For a hunting rifle 300 rounds might be a lot, and I say that because I have ammo for a couple of pieces that dates back to Grand-dad's reloading room in WWII. For an AR or other primarily self-defense piece (and for me this includes most handguns), 300 rounds is a day at the range.

I work it this way - every so often I do an inventory and if I have a firearm for which I don't have much ammo, I buy ammo, but if I have ammo I don't have a firearm for, Hooyah! I get to buy a new firearm. I turned up some M1 carbine ammo a couple of months ago that I got God knows where (my late Dad's ammo locker, most likely), and so, well, you know...

Storage is always an issue, but a little ingenuity may help to alleviate it - purchase some doilies and slip-covers and stack the stuff just right and voila! Instant furniture. You'll need a ready-service locker as well, though, because you don't want to be disassembling yer sofa in the middle of the Superbowl party if you need to blast some zombies or some fans of the other team.

You should have enough that if you divided it into 100 equal stacks, an individual stack would alarm a journalist.

I’m sure someone said that you never have enough ammo.

You should also have one or more black powder firearms in your prepping arsenal. Preferably flintlock but percussion would be a second choice.

I have made black powder from scratch and it works very well but involves more than just mixing the dry ingredients. It's not complicated at all. There's lots of good info on the internet and in books on making your own.

Best of all it's perfectly legal and the individual ingredients are all around us both in nature and various stores, readily available and quite stable and safe to store. You'll never run out when have the knowledge how to make it.

Another option is archery, whether it be compound bow, crossbow or recurve. Again, you'll never run out when you learn to make arrows or bolts.

I doubt we'll ever get to the point where we have to rely exclusively on such primitive arms but knowledge is power.

How much is enough?

I have enough. I'll leave that undefined for now.

jy8z III will have enough.

Has there ever been a list of what drugs to have on hand?

Not talking about narcotics, but things like Rocephen (strong injectable antibiotic), Z-Packs, tetracycline, Aspirin, etc?
