QuikTrip coming to grips with destruction of Ferguson store
St. Louis Business Journal's BizTalk ^ | August 11, 2014 | Ben Unglesbee

Updated with information about the Wal-Mart that was damaged Sunday night.

Sunday night’s unrest in Ferguson left the QuikTrip at 9420 West Florissant Ave. a burned wreckage. At the moment the company has no plans for rebuilding or even a process for how to make that decision; it has never faced a similar situation.

QuikTrip spokesman Mike Thornbrugh said there have been “no discussions whatsoever” about whether to rebuild. Instead, the Tulsa-based company, which had 2013 revenue of $11.2 billion, is focusing on its employees and customers, he said.

Thornbrugh said the cost of the damage had not yet been assessed, but he expects the destruction of the convenience store’s structure and merchandise will likely total seven figures.

Employees who were working at the QuikTrip Sunday night made it out safely before the store was looted and burned in the chaos that followed a peaceful vigil for Michael Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old man who was shot dead by a police officer Saturday.

Thornbrugh said employees of the store are being offered counseling and, once they are comfortable, the opportunity to transfer to another store while the company decides whether to rebuild.

Quiktrip is leaving security of the site to the police for now. As Thornbrugh said, “With all due respect, there’s nothing left to protect.”

The Wal-Mart at 10741 W. Florissant Ave. was also damaged Sunday.

A Wal-Mart spokesman said a "significant amount of merchandise" was taken from the store, which opened at 2 p.m. Monday but will close at 6 p.m. rather than 11 p.m.

Wal-Mart officials will determine later the store's hours moving forward.

One America has productive businesses and shops, the other has burned out husks of buildings with people running away with the goods.

They should not bother to rebuild. Take the insurance money and get out.

To me the it seems to be too coincidental with the cartels invading the USA. The rioters were shipped in and did their job as planned then paid off. The rioters were insurgent soldiers.

They should not bother to rebuild.

They HAVE to. Otherwise, the poor, downtrodden people will be in a 'food desert' - and Moochelle won't let that happen to 'her' people.

This is why we can’t have nice things. Why would they want to rebuild?

I think the Mayor of Ferguson stated that the people were for the most part not locals but people who came in from other areas. You got to thank social media for revolutionizing “gibmedat” smash and grab.

Another America makes its living stirring up the entitled class.

I think rebuilding is a foolish move that encourages more of the same behavior. Let that community do without, and let them get angry enough about the culture of crime blacks embrace to want to stop it.

The towns people said, the looters should be destroying white communities instead of their black community, making them as criminal as the imported thugs.

They approve of the violence, just not for their violent race.

2 America’s where one is looting and the other shooting the looters. Pretty soon there won’t be any looters.

It is long past time to apply Rule 308 to stop this crap. And do it unapologetically.

So, if your store gets burned down in a riot does your insurance pay? Or are you just SOL?

First, I don’t pretend to know what happened in this case, not enough information yet. If an unarmed person who was otherwise not a potential threat was shot outside normal use of force policies, it would be wrong. However, whatever happened does not justify rioting and looting.

I dealt with perpetrators of same after their arrests during the King riots. In many cases, they had burned down the only resources available for their families and neighbors. Between the Watts and King riots, the communities lost important resources, including food markets, that they depended upon. Many elderly folks were in the areas, many the grandparents of those I dealt with. How ironic that the very people who accuse others of categorizing them as probable criminals prove that they indeed can be lawless (and excused). There is no insight to why there are problems in the community, and much of it comes down to being told for years that they are victims and can expect unfair treatment.

When people such as President Obama and Eric Holder quit viewing everything through race-colored glasses, perhaps some of the problems plaguing minority communities could be solved.
