“Rubbish” works in basketball, team handball with more goals, more dynamic game, more enjoyment.

Sorry, but you seem confused.

The World Cup IS an international tournament for countries, I think you are getting it confused with the major club soccer championships, like the European Champions League.

Soccer is pure capitalism. Its YOUR sports that are set up on socialist lines: draft, salary caps etc. Soccer is big teams, big crowds, big money, little clubs die. North American sports is all about quality.

America is not yet a soccer powerhouse, and it was playing several major soccer nations, with much more history, what the US did this year was terrific.

BTW, in baseball and football, teams with .500 records and even losing records get into playoffs, so soccer isn’t exclusive.

p.s I would rather watch paint dry than watch baseball or frankly ‘football’. The latter is OK, but waaay too long. Soccer and rugby games are 90m and 80m.

Much less boring than baseball or ‘football’.

And how is a sport un-American?.

I don’t feel confused at all. I know it’s a tournament for countries. But it looks like the countries have players from all nations on their teams and strive to get the best players so it’s really not a national team. That’s the source of my non-interest. If all the players on the Belgium team were Belgium , etc. for the other countries, I would be more interested.

The players may come from different ethnic backgrounds, that’s all.

Look I heard the commentary about where some of the players came from so I lost interest.

Players will come from various ethnic backgrounds (as a Scotsman, 99% of my country’s team are white and Celtic/Anglo-Saxon, but one player is of black African and white Scottish parentage, ironically he is probably the most gifted player), but the World Cup is for international players. Just as a foreign NHL or NBA player cant play for America at the Olympics.

You cannot buy players to play in the world cup, they have to be of the nationality of the nation they are playing for. Either born there, of that country’s parents, or by naturalisation.
