The timing is beyond suspicious. My advice would be to consult a tax lawyer, preferably one who is not a lefty-ass liberal who might screw you over out of spite.

There are no coincidences in politics and an IRS audit. Under this administration the IRA has become the iron fist of a corrupt government.

It is going take the republicans taking control of all branches of the government thus applying pressure on the democrats to see how they fight.
Because the republicans sure as heck do not know how to put up a fight and defend our freedoms.

If you paid someone to do your taxes, give them a call.
They may have experience dealing with audits.

2.1 of the Articles of Impeachment of Richard M Nixon:
He has, acting personally and through his subordinates and agents, endeavoured to obtain from the Internal Revenue Service, in violation of the constitutional rights of citizens, confidential information contained in income tax returns for purposed not authorized by law, and to cause, in violation of the constitutional rights of citizens, income tax audits or other income tax investigations to be intitiated or conducted in a discriminatory manner.
Democrats and their 'high ethical standards' are a friggen joke.

Find a talented, tough, shark-bite, CPA/attorney who wants to punch the IRS-- "POW! RIGHT IN THE KISSER!" (Jackie Gleason- RIP)--
Take approproate action in Federal District Court (not "tax court" )...
Exercise your Constitutional rights to "face your accuser"
File a gazillion motions & 2 gazillion interrogatories, w/demands for dpcuments & emails from Lowey, et als as to (probabable?) cause for the audit
Demand a jury trial...

If we don't push back--
....Eventually they will push us "out" of the argument & close the options for he redress of grievances.

any ideas???
Yeah. Show receipts for the real estate taxes paid, a copy of the birth certificate and school enrollment records.
Gee that was simple. Get back to us when you have real problems.

What is a Tea party flag?
To: God luvs America
What the IRS doen’t understand is that people in the Tea Party are more likely than not to obey the law, in spite of how much the law sucks. They’re wasting their time in that way. Of course, if harassment is the goal, they’re doing OK in that regard.
Anyhow, they’d make out better checking in to entitlement fraud by the “taker” class — their own class.
To: God luvs America
If you’ve paid the items in question, gather up your recepits and submit them. In my limited experience with the IRS as a correspondence audit, that’s all they wanted and the matter was resolved amicably. I agree with being prepared but no point in over-reacting either.

What, were you paying your real estate taxes in cash?
And if your child is young enough for the childcare credit, have you lost her birth certificate already?
Lots of people get audited. How did you challenge Lowey?

in addition to the good advice already cited and after documenting your innocence, you may want to call issa and the rest of the house GOPe and report it as a potential ethics violation.
report back on the “help” you receive, but don’t hold your breath.

i'm now suppose to prove that i paid the $21K plus in real estate and school taxes ... i'm also expected to not only provide my daughters birth certificate but proves she lives with us for the child care credit...
I've been through an audit and quite frankly, I don't know why you're so upset. Just document your numbers and you're done.
You took certain deductions (eg, taxes, childcare) and now they want you to document those deductions. You do have the documents, right?
And the connection between the audit and your Tea Party flag is probably just coincidental. You most certainly could never prove otherwise.
I would not get a lawyer at this point. If they disallow some deductions and you don't agree, then get a lawyer.
