George W. Bush: 'It's Good' for Obama to Play Golf

Former President George W. Bush says the current occupant of the White House should be allowed to play golf without being chastised.

"I see our president criticized for playing golf. I don't. I think he ought to play golf," Bush told "In Play with Jimmy Roberts," in an interview obtained by The Hill to air on Tuesday.

"I know the pressures of the job," he said, adding, "and to be able to get outside and play golf with some of your pals is important for the president. It does give you an outlet."

"I think it's good for the president to be out playing golf," Bush added.

Bush, an avid golfer, stopped his own outings in 2003 after an explosion at the U.N. headquarters in Baghdad killed special representative Sergio Vieira de Mello and more than a dozen others.

Obama's frequent golf games have come under scrutiny from an early stage. On Oct. 25, 2009, just 10 months into his first term, longtime CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knoller tweeted:

Today - Obama ties Pres. Bush in the number of rounds of golf played in office: 24. Took Bush 2 yrs & 10 months.

I like Bush best when he’s working on his charities - or cutting brush on his ranch, even better.....

People like Bush are fairly impervious to what any political party does in the US. Taxes go up? So what. He doesn’t have to have an income in any particular year, and has so much family money in various sheltered silos that he doesn’t have to worry about his lifestyle changing. Health care? He and his family will always have access to the best. Gun laws? Well, he has armed guards, and no one is going to take any weapons away from the Bushes. Etc. Etc.

So, he can afford to be ‘above the fray’ and be the gentleman politician. The rest of us have to read the headlines and deal with what they mean.

I wish Obama would play golf full time - twelve hours a day or more, with no work at all for the next four years.

We live here - today - in the aftermath of one of the most perplexing Presidencies ever. While Bush skillfully and avidly prosecuted the war on terror that needed to be waged, he made so many boneheaded decisions and acted on them, it is likely we will never erase them.

Many of these mistakes were on the economy. He and his crew had an idea of what was wrong, but only went through the motions of trying to reign it in (e.g., Fannie/Freddie). He and Congress could have pushed harder and worked like Democrats do for their goals.

But without a doubt, unparalleled in the annals of history, his creation of the DHS and TSA was the single biggest assault on American Freedom ever perpetrated. He put in place an organization that allows Obama today to clasp his bony fingers around our necks - in between golf rounds, of course. Many, many rounds of gold - even while our soldiers and diplomats die, American Citizens die in foreign Muslim countries.

So, Former President Bush, you should just do like you did when your critics blustered and shouted and should have responded, remain silent.

” Wonder what will happen to Cruz?”

Probably the same thing they did to Tom DeLay with
ol “W”’s approval. I could see Bush pulling some strings
on it on the golf course.
The march to socialism never stopped or even slowed
down under either Bush presidency. They were just a false
sense of opposition to it.

A guy that knows the pressure of lives at stake and doesn’t give a crap about what people criticize him about - even the guy that criticizes him the most he still defends when he does something necessary. If only the current idiot would play more golf.

Actually Bush said it was good for the President, in the coded words of a politician, this does not have to include Obama. Possible deniably!

Oh, I agree. That way all his bad decisions
only effect his golf score, not screw up the
rest of the country. Amen

When he made that sharp left turn soon after his reelection, it was obvious that was the direction he preferred.

Many bushbots still have their heads buried in the sand and pine for ole open-checkbook George.

Like it or not, the current economic crisis exploded on his watch in 2007. He instigated the bail-outs, which ended up being pay-off to cronies.

One amnesty attempt happened in his first term, but it was quelled by the 9-11 attacks and Democratic Senator Robert Byrd stopping it on a technicality in 2002. Bush pushed 3 additional attempts during his 2nd term.

GWB: “Miss me yet?”

Not by a long shot, George. Not by a long shot.

Time spent on the golf course is time not spent warring against us.
