Though it indicates a conspiracy, I have had similar thoughts. Especially, since the so-called local “security” people were of the Febuary 17th group, Islamists, and it was reported that they left the consulate before the attack began. ...I believe it was one of the former SEALS that was killed that sent a text message that the people had left. .....So many different stories on the web about this that I might be wrong.

That Stephens was known , loved, and appreciated by the Libyan ( democratic )people is a fact.

Al Qaida sought to kill the others who were looking for and recover 10,000 - 20,000 MANPADS according to the State Department testimony.
Unofficial sources put the number at 20,000- 40,000 MANPADS (shoulder fired missles).
The key question is how many of those missles were provided by the U.S. government to the democratic Libyans , and ended up with A Q ?
I think that the wrong group took him prisoner, and he was killed by A.Q. along with others to prevent recovery of the missles that the U.S. provided.
Instead of the ‘October Surprise’ that Obama was going to recover our captive ambassador and demonstrate foreign policy success , he ended up with 4 bodies , and an antagonized Islamic caliphate up in arms ( Litterally !).
