San Diego, California (CNN) -- Juana Reyes didn't think that selling chicken, pork and chili cheese tamales would buy her a one-way ticket out of the country. But it just might.
Reyes is a Sacramento, California, woman who the media is calling "the tamale lady." A 46-year-old single mother of two and illegal immigrant, Reyes faces deportation by the Obama administration.
So what's the problem? Aren't illegal immigrants supposed to be deported?Sure. But there are rules to the game, and the administration keeps breaking them. This case undermines the claim that the immigration crackdown is targeting hardened criminals.
Reyes' trouble started on June 28 when she was arrested outside a Walmart by Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies and charged with trespassing and interfering with a business.
What exactly was the interference? Reyes is unemployed. She was selling tamales so she could buy food and clothes for her two children -- 10-year-old Cesar and 7-year-old Montserrat, both of whom were born in the United States.

Think about it. This woman wasn't holding a handmade sign that read: "Will work for food." She was working by making food and selling it.

She was arrested for refusing to leave when asked to. There is another matter Ruben left out. Food vendors in Calif must be licensed. Her food bypassed any health inspections, hygiene and sanitation practices remain unknown. He makes out like well it's just a causal matter, what happens if her food is tainted and people get sick ? She is selling food with no oversight, this is a serious health issue, no matter what her intentions are.
If you don’t arrest and deport her, then she drives out of business the honest food preparation companies that follow the rules.
I’m growing tired of the humanization of illegal activity as if to say that it should be allowed.
In my opinion, this is tantamount to saying that Holmes, despite killing 12 people in a movie theater, is a regular volunteer at the local soup kitchen, fosters blind, albino kittens, and heals sick babies. They’re still criminals!
Also, Walmart paid for their land and the use thereof, all the liability insurance and whatnot.
No overhead for selling out of a truck!
I actually support selling out of trucks, but it has to be allowed for EVERYONE, and the consumer should be made aware that no health or safety checks are done. Buyer beware and all that, maybe make it illegal to sell to minors since they can’t be expected to make reasonable decisions about whether to buy a tamale from the back of a truck.
We are relaxed about food safety here in the U.S, we have it good, but there is a reason you don’t drink the water or anything the water has touched in Mexico.
The problem is not that they are deporting the Tamale lady. The problem is that they are letting the food stamp illegals stay.
They should deport both. That would be fair.
Ruben Navarette is an open borders shill. He can go buy tamales from Juana in Tijuana. If he breaks any Mexican laws down there the Mexican cops will throw his cholo ass in jail.
“She was arrested for refusing to leave when asked to”
That was her biggest mistake of the day. She should have packed up and left. It all went down hill after that.
Ruben Navarrette Jr is a free borders rube.
How much other government assistance is she receiving or has she and her children received? Have she or her children used public health facilities? Her children are being educated here with free lunches, breakfast, brunch, snacks and banquets. Are they gang members? Have they ever been arrested? How many times? She didn’t build the road to the Walmart.
Maybe we could get her a little training in food handling, and a license and deport few “community activists” instead? I’d be happy to trade green cards to SOME (non-felon, non-dui) illegals in exchange for expelling Marxist scum and the parasites they enable at rate of about 10 to 1.
Relatively speaking, I’m sure we’d show a massive net gain.
Let me give you a clue. The restaurants that DO get oversight get a brief check about once every 3 years. You think that makes a difference? 'Oversight' is a joke.
I say that as someone that had a kitchen health inspection every morning in the USAF, and only saw 2 inspectors, my entire time in the civilian kitchens.
That said, I'm an American that can make and sell tamales, but the markets for that are filled with illegals.

Dollars to doughnuts, it was a 100% cash business, and she was not filing income tax returns, either.
In general stuff sold outdoors in California has a problem ~ upwind of you there are the gila monsters ~ and they urinate ~ and they got all kinds of diseases. Then, there’s Campylobacter ~ wonder why I can spell it ~ they regularly find it on seats on the trams at all the amusement parks out there.
All you need to know is Ruben Navarette. He is for his people and against Americans.
The sodium and polyunsaturated fat content of her tamales were too high to meet Moochelle’s guidelines.
I say, let her stay; help her get licensed. She’s a worker. But in exchange, Mexico is required to take one non-working EBT entitled brood sow and her litter!
Yep. It often seems that we are deporting the wrong people.
I disagree. It doesn’t matter if they work or not. They are here in violation of the law. Kick them all out.
I think of this one struggling restaurant owner here in town. Mexicans opened up a mexican restaurant across the street from him on a U.S. Gov’t grant. The owner of the existing restaurant was livid that the government was giving people money to set up shop and compete against him.
I am pretty good with deporting illegals, that is what is supposed to happen when they are identified.
