(INDIANAPOLIS) - Millions of illegal immigrants are getting a bigger tax refund than you.
Bob Segall, of WTHI reports finding a massive tax loophole that provides billions of dollars in tax credits to undocumented workers and, in many cases, people who have never stepped foot in the United States. And you are paying for it. I nside his central Indiana office, a longtime tax consultant sits at his desk, shaking his head in disbelief.
"There is not a doubt in my mind there's huge fraud taking place here," he said, slowly flipping through the pages of a tax return.
The tax preparer does not want you to know his name for fear of reprisal, but he does want you to know about a nationwide problem with a huge price tag.
He came to 13 Investigates to blow the whistle.
"We're talking about a multi-billion dollar fraud scheme here that's taking place and no one is talking about it," he said.
The scheme involves illegal immigrants -- illegal immigrants who are filing tax returns.
How it works
The Internal Revenue Service says everyone who is employed in the United States - even those who are working here illegally - must report income and pay taxes. Of course, undocumented workers are not supposed to have a social security number. So for them to pay taxes, the IRS created what's called an ITIN, an individual taxpayer identification number. A 9-digit ITIN number issued by the IRS provides both resident and nonresident aliens with a unique identification number that allows them to file tax returns.
While that may have seemed like a good idea, it's now backfiring in a big way.

Child tax credit
The Demorats do know how to take of their constiuents.
There is no loophole, the returns described are blatantly fraudulent. You can only claim Qualifying Children and to be one the child must live with you for more than 6 months AND be either a US Citizen, US National, or US resident. Kids back in Mexico DO NOT QUALIFY. But then again, why would an ILLEGAL worry about following tax law if they don’t follow immigration law. See Pub 17, pg 231.
Glad to hear this getting some play. The child credit, EITC, and other credits, refundable or not, are more insidious than any deduction.

They have been doing it, eyes wide open, for years. It is called EIC and represents the most obvious and callous direct vote buying scheme in the history of all democracies (of which, thank God, we are not).

When I decided to claim a dependent other than a qualifying child I had to provide proof that I paid more than half of her total costs...damn near half of my total costs.
And someone can claim 20 kids in mexico without being questioned?

This year I made a mistake and my fat fingers put a 6 in place of a 3 in my kids SSN.
I was waiting for my stupid $350 back from the feds and after 4 weeks I got a letter saying they "corrected" my return and I owed them $2500 because one of my dependents was excluded.
Long story short, I hope I corrected the situation with a letter documenting that my natural born son is an actual dependent, still waiting but hopeful I can avoid a full audit.
So glad the illegals are spared these worries, I guess its important that they feel welcomed. Its good to know someone is watching /s
