Were they? Or were, the leftist ones like Carbonite anyway, part of the organized campaign, signing on as advertisers and then waiting for the signal to bail out and make it look worse for Rush?

Maybe both. But the organized campaign is likely far bigger than the number of radical leftist advertisers.
Yesterday, I got an email from one such outfit: LeftAction.com (how I got on their list, I don't know). They're running a boycottRush.org campaign. A bunch of rabid, leftist weasels. I unsubscribed to the list and sent them a blistering email.
This manufactured tizzy was orchestrated to make someone on the conservative side look bad. Rush took the bait, none of the candidates did like they were supposed to. Personally I think the script was for Santorum to make the gaffe.
This will turn out OK because I think it was supposed to be an October surprise and was sprung early. The left can pander to the minorities, the blacks and hispanics and only get 26% of the vote. Capture women and you get 51%
This issue will be history by then as gas prices, formidably bad real estate news, and Iran dominate the campaign.
