Its so difficult to know what to give her. Every Valentines Day, I struggle with the decision.
She knows I love her. That is not a question. I tell her how much she means to me nearly every day.
But on Valentines Day, she deserves something special, something tangible that conveys the depths of my feelings for her.
I often ask other guys for suggestions, but none of their ideas seem to be what Im looking for.
Ill tell you what she likes. She likes it best when we just go for a long walk together. Just the other evening, shortly before dusk, we took a long hike together through the woods near our home. She had had a long day.
During that walk, we climbed to a high, bare rock just in time to see the full moon rising like a giant peach in the east. We stood there together, taking in the scene. We could both feel the stress draining out of us as we stood there watching the moon rise.
I guess we just like the simple things.
Weve had a great time getting together at the cabin of friends in summer. We hang out on the dock, listening to the little waves slapping at the pilings. If she gets too hot, she takes a dip and swims out toward a nearby island. Then we rest in the sun. If we should fall asleep, well, thats fine, too.
Sometimes, we pack some food and head up the North Shore for a hike on the Superior Hiking Trail. We try to pick the off-times, when were less likely to run into lots of other folks on the trail. Its not uncommon for us to walk for a long way in complete silence, just taking in the sun-dappled woods and the sounds of intermittent creeks. After a time, well find a good log, sit down and share a bit of lunch.
As I say, its the simple things that mean the most.
Well take off occasionally for a road trip, too. Well head west or south or north it doesnt matter. Ill crank up some Dylan or Marc Cohn or an old Temptations collection. The miles seem to melt away.
Sometimes when were taking a break along the way, Ill look over at her and think how lucky I was to have found her all those years ago. Its always good to be together in new country, exploring new places.
Sometimes, you just need a change of scenery to get a fresh look at life. We come home recharged, our bond strengthened by the time away.
Sometimes, too, well be apart for several days, and that only serves to make us appreciate one another more once were back together.
But none of that changes the challenge before me now. What do I get her this year? How do I express my admiration for her with something for Valentines Day? Ill come up with something. But if you have any ideas, feel free to share them with me. Be creative. Make it special.,P>
Shes the best yellow Lab Ive ever had.
LOL!! Check out in your area for a “Doggie-Day Spa’’. It’s just what it sounds like. A place where doggies get spolied for the day.
Ping.
Uh Oh, it should be samcook.areavoices.com.
It’s a great piece he wrote and I wanted to share with you. How do I change it?
BTW your advice on posting worked Mycroft Holmes. Now if I can just get the name of the blog right.
Happy Valentines Day
Happy Valentines Day to you george. I am sitting here with my 13 year-old English setter, tri-colored and still beautiful, and wonder where I can take her in her final years she enjoys the most.
She loves running along the Rio Grande river (We are visiting N.M. right now) and any new place to explore. We are the same, I like the same things.
Boy, she is slowing down, though, and I know I’ll have to lose her someday soon. The thought breaks my heart.

Yep. Love 'em while ya got 'em.

I so love my girl. I tell her a lot (when I have to pick her up because her hips are giving out and she has a lot of trouble doing this on her own) that we are growing old together, although she is doing it faster than me.
Thanks, Girl, very nice and well written.
We’ve had black Labs (us, our daughter and son) for many years. Our daughter and family just got a yellow Lab and she’s hyper though she’s still a pup and a very lovable dog.
Great dogs and become part of the family from the start.
I had a yellow lab, - now deceased.
I thought you were talking about a woman at first and I was going to suggest a toaster, just to be a smart-ass,LOL!
Speaking AS a woman,I’d be perturbed if my boyfriend or husband bought me a toaster for Valentine’s Day,although there is a Tampa Bay Lightning toaster that imprints the team’s logo on the bread.
It’s pretty cool!
I never thought about getting a Valentine’s Day “gift” for my cat. I love him very much.
Give him a can of tuna, a live mouse, or, if he is an inside only cat, put your laptop in front of him and play cat Youtube videos. I have played them for Tsali, my cat, and he gets into it — the ones of cats fighting, or talking. There are a million of them on YOUtube. I even play birds singing, lots of stuff that gets his attention!

He comes running when he hears the “pop” sound of a can opening. He loves the wet food and gets it every morning.
He likes to play with me on the bed. I’ll put my arm under the blankets and move it around. His eyes get all big and black and then he pounces. He doesn’t care about the computer. He doesn’t go outside at all, either.
We almost lost him back in 2010 from an intestinal blockage that turned out to be a HUGE hairball. He passed it,thank G-d. He wasn’t eating or going to the bathroom. We fed him baby food but he didn’t keep that down.either. He’s better now. he’s my baby and I thought I’d fall apart without him. He’s 11 but I know cats tend to live longer if they stay indoors.
I go on YouTube to look up old Seventies commercials. They were a hoot. At least they didn’t have those cockamamie “personal massager” or ED pill commercials.
How do you explain erectile disfunction to your child if they are watching TV with you and a Viagra ad comes on?

Nice, I have a red cat who has adopted me as his human.
