The US government has been slowly eradicating the Posse Commitatus Act of 1878. That act banned the US government from using the US military in domestic law enforcement. Over the past few decades the US government has repeatedly violated the act. However, many Republicans have insisted that the Posse Comitatus Act needs to be respected to protect the rights of American Citizens.
South Carolina's left-wing Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, however, is supporting provisions to eradicate Posse Commitatus and dramatically expand the powers of the Federal government.
The US Senate Armed Forces Committee, led by Carl Levin (D-MI) and John McCain (R-AZ), held a secret closed door session to insert ominous new Federal powers into the Defense Authorization Bill. This is the annual bill to fund the US military. These new powers were requested by the Obama administration.

Thanks, I saw it. Makes me sick to my stomach. And what do we get from the so-called "Conservative Constitutionalists" here? "Ooooo the ACLU isn't believable" Well I wish that there was a Conservative version of the ACLU that gives a damn about our Constitutional rights, but there isn't -- just a loud chorus of bitching AFTER those rights have floated down the river.
That is why we have Sheriff's Offices, police departments and National Guard.
I agree about the National Guard.
However, if you read the Posse Comitatus act, it does not preclude the military from being used for military operations.
It prevents them from being involved in police operations.
So, I did not need to worry about it being carefully written to cover military necessity. It already does that.
In other words, if the Iranian Special Forces drops a killer team into the US, then our SpecOps is more than authorized to hunt them down. In fact, they are probably the only one with the weaponry to do so.

Lindsey Graham says "free speech is a great idea but ..."
And don't forget John McCain in this, who helped craft this behind closed doors. Obama already says that he is going to veto it.
Correct me if I am wrong, but looking at the long game, it's almost as though Graham and McCain are giving Obama a chance to be "the hero" here by vetoing it. By the time that people figure it out and tensions rise over it, Obama will swoop in to "save our Constitutional Rights". Why would they do that? Because McCain and Graham have more power with Obama in office than they would with a Republican president in office. Could it be that they are preserving their own personal political power at our expense? Nah...
"You have nothing to fear from Barrack Obama", John McCain 2008.
You are absofreakinglutely right! I don’t doubt your suspicions even one iota of a cracker.
Apparently true. I read page 362 and see the exclusions.
