In Central Texas this year the weather has been particularly brutal with drought conditions not seen in the last 70 years.

I live on 8 acres of land that teems with wildlife and socialist deer. Because of the drought I have been feeding them corn. They were looking pretty bad but now are in fine health due to my corn.

Yesterday I ran out of corn and they missed their feeding for 1 day until I purchased some more corn. The day that I did not have corn they were walking up to the house (less than 10 feet from me) and giving me this look of WHERE THE HELL IS THE CORN? Due to their "community organizer skills" I quickly succumbed to their demands and bought and distributed more largess to the herd.

My freezer is almost empty of venison. November will be a real bitch of a month for the fattest does in the socialist herd.

I no longer hunt as the joy of killing left me some years ago. I have absolutely no problem with hunters and I do love venison. My neighbor comes over and "harvests" a few does for us. He even field dresses them and I take them to the processor for butchering and processing.

All the above is really true. It is also true that socialism may kill you if you are dependent on it.

PS Deer Jerky is fantastic and deer sausage is the best. However, deer meat is incredible lean. To make sausage it is best to mix in some beef fat, otherwise it is too dry.

For hamburgers I use 50% ground deer meat and 50% ground beef with a fat ration of 80/20. I cook them very close to a hot bed of oak coals until they are seared but are still red on the inside. I then place them away from the coals but still in the cooker and let the heat and smoke finish cooking them. It is the worlds best hamburger.

Sounds good! I had a double buffalo burger today. Very lean also.

Reading this story reminded me of a squirrel a neighbor had been feeding.

One morning she ran out of food and had left a bare feeder. That little squirrel actually got down on the deck, marched over to the window and began tapping on the glass to get attention.

“FEED ME NOW!”

My mom thought it was hysterical.

That is exactly what is happening in our valley.

The deer disappeared last spring and hung out by the river.

Two weeks ago, I start seeing deer. It took me a couple of days to figure out why they’re coming back, but it’s simple really. The hunters have put up their feeders and the deer have come back. Corn feeders and even watering troughs and salt licks.

The deer are happily leaving the safety of the river and walking right into the hunter’s traps.

It’s a good parable.
