ATF Counsel email to Melson on Gunwalker-Terry murder link preceded intimidation (Demanded Coverup)

A just-uncovered January 5, 2011 email to former Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Acting Director Kenneth Melson from Stephen R. Rubenstein, Chief Counsel, ATF, responded to a request by Melson for information regarding allegations on whistleblower website CleanUpATF that walked guns were linked to the murder of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, and indicated this was a violation of ATF Orders and Standards of Conduct.

Copies of the email and Melson’s reply are posted in this correspondent's Scribd account and included in the sidebar slideshow accompanying this article.  Per Rubenstein’s email:

This is in response to your request regarding information posted on "Clean Up ATF." Specifically, on December 22, 2010, "1desrtrat" [screen name used by CUATF comment poster--DC] stated that "word is" that Phoenix FD ASAC George Gillet "[a]llegedly approved more than 500 AR-15 type rifles from Phoenix and Tucson cases to be 'walked' into Mexico." The post further states that "[o]ne of those rifles is rumored to have been linked to the recent killing of a Border Patrol Officer in Nogales, AZ."

Interesting that the bigshots at ATF carefully monitor the CleanUpATF website. That is the site where current and former ATF agents post the inside scoop of what is REALLY happening at that organization.

Can we assume the bigshots of the ATF are liberal elites?

Be sure to tell us when they start putting handcuffs on these folks and actually placing criminal charges against them. For now they are keeping our minds away from the impending financial disaster, the TSA gropers and the fact that not a single primary candidate has been asked what he or she intends to do about the closing in of AGENDA 21 on our individual liberties such as the expanding global numbering identification system used by the United Nation's International Civil Aviation Organization and the the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators.

Turn the TV on and grab another beer.

Never thought I'd be doing this, but there are people in the BATF who take their jobs seriously as revenuers, making sure tobacco and alcohol taxes get collected, and some even interdicting/recovering weapons we'd universally agree were headed into or in the wrong hands (known criminals).

Most organizations contain at least some LEOs who do take their oaths seriously, while in many varying numbers of agents have been corrupted by those who would use the organizations for purely political ends.

It is the standards of the whistleblowers which helped greatly to break this story open.

As the bad apples are weeded out, it also leaves room for the agents with more integrity to move up.

IMHO, the only firearms the BATFE should be worried about are those in or going into criminal hands, the rest of us should have no infringements on our RKBA, including the NFA.

I know you are correct. Almost every group of people has some good ones. I also know many in Federal Law Enforcement that consider the BATFE to be a bunch of Keystone Kops, most of whom couldn't make the standards to get on a three letter agency. The BATFE has a serious corruption problem and a well deserved image problem. They need to go on the straight and narrow for a few years. As you say quit trying to make criminals out of law abiding citizens, drop the strong arm crap, and become professional again.

For many years here in Reno the BATFE was housed in it's own separate offices from other Federal LEO consolidated buildings. No one wanted them around!!!
