The latest meeting between President Barack Obama and lawmakers regarding the nation's debt ended without any progress on a deal and a new level of animosity between those involved. According to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Virginia), "The president told me, Eric, dont call my bluff. You know Im going to take this to the American people. He then walked out." Evidently the president believes with a few more 'yes we cans' and 'eat our peas' from him, we will support a deal that serves his own political agenda but does a huge disservice to the country.

The latest meeting between President Barack Obama and lawmakers regarding the nation’s debt ended without any progress on a deal and a new level of animosity between those involved. According to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Virginia), “The president told me, Eric, dont call my bluff. You know Im going to take this to the American people. He then walked out.” Evidently the president believes with a few more ‘yes we cans’ and ‘eat our peas’ from him, we will support a deal that serves his own political agenda but does a huge disservice to the country.
To Representative Cantor and his fellow Republicans on Capitol Hill, I say go ahead and call his bluff and I implore Mr. Obama to, just this once, do what he says he will do and take it to us!
Please Mr. President, stand before the American people and explain why tax increases which, by your own admission, would not take effect until 2013 are a necessary part of a debt ceiling deal in 2011.
Show us exactly what spending cuts you and your fellow Democrats are willing to make in exchange for that increase in borrowing and exactly when those cuts would take effect.
Prove to us that your idea of spending cuts is the actual lowering of current government spending and not some promise of future cuts if some potential circumstance triggers a possible cut.
Acknowledge that a spending cut is lowering the number of actual dollars currently being spent not lowering the anticipated increase in spending. Going from a 10% increase to a 5% increase is not a 50% cut.
It is time for you to show some real leadership on this issue instead of using your bully pulpit to pit groups of Americans against each other, threaten our most vulnerable citizens, demonize your political opponents and offer nothing but meaningless rhetoric instead of valid arguments in support of reasonable ideas.
Most likely you intended your threat to “take this to the American people” to mean that you will be able to talk us into choosing incompetence, political grandstanding and abject failure over reason. You aren’t that good a con man, Mr. President. A growing number of Americans are in fact calling your bluff and we challenge you to take your actual plan for reducing our debt (if you have one) directly to us.
He’s on the verge of showing his complete lack of economic understanding and his true persona. One more news conference should do it!
