As policy makers search for ways to decrease spending in Washington, they should not ignore the public payroll. For our part, we have long suggested that any serious spending reduction must include cuts to the federal payroll and more evidence has surfaced that suggests explosive public compensation needs to be addressed. A new report from the Congressional Research Service shows over 77,000 federal employees make more than the governors of their states.

CRS found that in 2009, 77,057 federal employees across every area of employment made more than their respective governors. In Colorado, 10,875 federal employees made more than Governor Ritter’s $90,000 salary, and over 7% of full-time federal employees in Maryland receive a higher annual salary than Governor O’Malley’s $150,000...

This isnt very helpful information for two reasons.

1. It doesnt show what the 7% of people DO. Are they PhDs in physics, engineering, etc.? I would be upset if the janitor made 150k ... but if the leading minds in research and development for weapons systems ... not so much.

2. All it shows is that the governor of MD is overpaid.

My Ex is a air traffic control supervisor and makes over 125k annually with full health and lots of holiday/vacation.

She has no college education having obtained her training in the USAF. She makes no contribution to her pension that she will get when she hits 50.

She told me how they shift personnel to the highest paying positions for the final three years as this ensures the highest possible pension.

She dumped me so now I have a personal element to rooting for federal employee reform!

A regular federal worker (post-1984ish) gets a pension of just 1% of their salary for each year worked. The salary is the average of the highest 3 annual salaries. Someone making 100K/yr gets 30K/yr pension after 30 years. This is nothing like some states give out. Of course, there is the additional retirement of social security and the 401K (TSP). Ronald Reagon put them all on SS in order to keep it solvent.

The WDC area has a lot of Senior Enlisted Service (SES) people. These are very sharp people that are equivalent to a General, who fill posts that need this kind of executive level skills. You need to pay the price if you want people that good. You also have lawyers, doctors and engineers where you need to pay a fair wage to retain the talent.

Salaries are also adjusted for local pay differentials in the real world. WDC is expensive so consequently the locality pay is higher than in Iowa.

I don’t think the pay is too high, there is just way too many federal employees.

Yes, there are so many lords lording it over the taxpayers and it’s time for a severe ending of it all...very soon. This is theft of our nations wealth, whether it is seen that way or not.

Oh, and SES is “Senior Executive Service.”

A GS-14 is the equivalent of a Lt. Col, a GS-15 is the equivalent of a full colonel, and the SES’ers are, indeed, equivalent to general officers.

OOPS. I did mean Senior Executive Service.

And an SES gets their own flag, just like a General.
