I well remember when local activists began organizing a local chapter of the Birch Society, spearheaded, as a matter of fact, by the father of another Freeper and long time friend of mine.

My father was an officer in the Fla. National Guard at the time and also held the organizer in high regard and friendship. Daddy spoke of how correct the JBS was and how badly they were needed, but then the word came down, it might have meant the end of my father's career had he been openly active, looking back at some of the other things I remember it almost certainly would have ended his career.

Yes, in a "big picture" kind of way. But he was over the top, and he got some of the names wrong.

I still have my grandfather’s 1959 edition of the “Blue Book”. It’s a thin little book, but reading Welch’s words even now just makes me wonder how all the slap-in-the-face warnings went ignored? Just look where America is now? The parasites outnumber the hosts and there’s no going back. The communists are winning, and the only thing Congress seems capable of doing, regardless of its makeup, is change the pace of their progress.

An old, opinionated, patriotic, windy kind of white guy, complete with orotund read-from-your-notes oratory that is the relic of an old-fashioned classical education based on Christian religious principles, is just simply not believable ... or perhaps more important ...not attractive to increasingly dumbed-down people who can still vote.

Of course they did, and will continue to do so. Nowadays, if someone knows something, and someone else doesn't, there is the grave danger of a great loss of self-esteem in the transfer of information from the knowledgeable to the ignorant. That's because the opinions of the ignorant are now just as valid as the factual knowledge of the more informed. Furthermore, the ignorant demand the support of the informed, but not vice-versa.

Sorry. It seems to be the life-cycle of democracies.

I have been swayed by the MSM’s labeling of the JBS as “extremists”. For this reason I have ignored and avoided the group in the same way I avoided the Klan. (No, I am NOT equating the two!) Mentally, I had characterized both groups as whackos!

Ironically, I went to the same high school as John Birch (though much, much later), lived for a time in his old house and even dated one of his nieces. Thanks to the internet, we are all able to do our own research, gather evidence, use forums like Free Republic to discuss things with others and finally make up our own minds. It is good to have this electronic version of Mars Hill.

Another eye opener!

It looks like Welsh had some looney ideas and some accurate assessments.

However, now we have ended up with a collective impression that everyone in America associated with “anti-communism”, from McCarthy to Nixon to the John Birch Society is anathema. The Left obviously holds this position, but what is troubling is that the Right does also.

Is there a socially acceptable, anti-communist group or individual, either historical or current?

I use the term “anti-communist” a bit loosely. I include opposition to not only Soviet collectivism but also to Socialism & other “Progressive/Liberal” manifestations.

He seems to have had some good things to say, but became insular and kind of nuts in many ways too, as Buckley aptly demonstrated.

It's very easy to shift away from the true horror of communist reality in an age dominated by a media and a university system that has been successfully anti-anti-communist for so long. Since the cold war was won, the right has not wanted to bring up the subject for fear of being derided by the left. It's a very unfortunate thing, there is no constant reminder about how bad a system socialism (aka communism) really is. We keep hearing about Nazi Germany, which was admittedly horrible, but are forgetting that over almost a century, socialist countries have killed hundreds of millions of their own people making Hitler look like a piker.

They also said Ike was a “dedicated member of the communist conspiracy.” In short, whatever good ideas they might have had were overshadowed by their nutty everyone’s-a-commie-but us philosophy.
