SEOUL - South Korea said on Wednesday it would send some of its reserve boron to Japan after a request from Tokyo for the metalloid, which being is mixed with seawater to limit damage to Japan's crippled nuclear reactors.
An economy ministry official said South Korea would send 52.6 tons of boron to Japan from its reserves of 310 tons.
Tokyo has requested supplies of the key material, vital for stopping fission nuclear reactions, after its own stockpile has been largely used up at the Fukushima nuclear power plant.....

Boron sounds like an insult I would use on Obama.
For a second there I thought it said bourbon. While the guys who stayed behind in that plant certainly deserve to have a drink on the rest of us, 52 tons of Makers Mark seemed a bit excessive.
Good for them after what the Japs did to them in the past.
Yeah, we sent the aircraft carrier Reagan. Some of the guys apparently got radiation poisoning or something and the carrier was re-deployed. Several merchant ships with supplies tying up outside of Sendai(sp) would have helped more.
Are boron and borax from the same mines? If so, the Calif desert is full of the stuff — remember Reagan advertising for 20 mule team borax. One thing California is good for maybe.
Barry Soetero help a steadfast US ally? Surely you jest! Now he might send some arms & supplies to Gaddafi, or help out Hugo or Kim Jong Il....
Kills ants good.
Neutron Sallie, you got to slow yo’ neutrons down....

Tried this yet?
IIRC, when Chernobyl got bad the Soviets were just dumping it by the ton from heavy lift copters. That was pretty much near the end....
Yes but dear leader had an engagement with some fellow travelers in Rio.
Are boron and borax from the same mines?
Heh, no. Boron does not occur naturally, it is manufactured with great difficulty.
The boron used in reactors is Enriched boron (boron-10)
The 10B isotope is good at capturing thermal neutrons.
The USS Ronald Reagan can desalinate thousands of gallons of sea water, has a hospital, and can move people and supplies via helicopter.
Those gallons and gallons of sea water attends the needs of the ship. How many gallons would be needed to cool a reactor plus providing water for the crew. Word has it that the Japanese are using sea water to try cooling. There was no word on supplies, if any, were delivered by the Reagan. I think the services on the Reagan would have been overwhelmed. In any case the Navy redeployed it. Still no word if any rescue ships with supplies are there or even on their way.
