Franklin Delano Roosevelt was right about one thing – collective bargaining has no place in public service.
In a 1937 letter, Roosevelt noted the special relationship between government employees and those who pay their salaries – the taxpayers:
All Government employees should realize that the process of collective bargaining, as usually understood, cannot be transplanted into the public service. It has its distinct and insurmountable limitations when applied to public personnel management. The very nature and purposes of Government make it impossible for administrative officials to represent fully or to bind the employer in mutual discussions with Government employee organizations. The employer is the whole people, who speak by means of laws enacted by their representatives in Congress. Accordingly, administrative officials and employees alike are governed and guided, and in many instances restricted, by laws which establish policies, procedures, or rules in personnel matters.
Today, Americans nationwide are watching as public sector unions threaten to tear Wisconsin apart over a bill designed to help repair the state’s budget.
Lawmakers have been threatened with death, and the Capitol building in Madison has been stormed, occupied, and trashed.
Union thugs and their radical left wing allies have tried spreading unrest throughout the country, all the while claiming to be fighting for the “working people.”
But as Roosevelt pointed out, public sector employees theoretically work for all the citizens in their jurisdiction, as they are paid from monies taken in taxes.

All you have to do is give people the choice whether or not to join them and the unions will go away.
They have only lasted this long because they have managed to literally FORCE people to join and pay dues.

For taxpayers to have a fair negotiating position three things would be necessary:
1) Taxes would have to be voluntary (Taxpayers could chose not to throw good money after bad, as business can).
2) Taxpayers would have to have the authority to close the agency and fire the entire staff (as a business can).
3) Right to work would have to be the law of the state. (Taxpayers could wait until contract expiration and hire non union, as business can).
Yeah, it seems I got four pop ups, and 13 cookies from it, but I’ve seen worse.

A word to the wise is generally sufficient. We don't want to drive good conservative thought off of FR. But we need to fight a recent surge of people using FR as a launching pad for click-through marketing attacks. This kind of abuse is unfair to our volunteer donors that keep FreeRepublic.com running.
