Christians have always taken care of people. It feels good to give and help. Now the government wants the credit for helping people so they take your money from you before you have a chance to give. They then take credit for the good they do with your money. You get no credit and instead of feeling good you are angry.
This isn’t even new, of course. This has been the project for Progressivism since the 1880’s. The idea was and is to supplant private charity so that religion as a counterweight to government could eventually be turfed out altogether. Then the cult of the state as God could be quietly installed and children taught to worship Baal.
Come to think of it, that makes the project a lot older than the 1880’s, eh? {eyeroll}
This is one of the many moral hazards with government, as opposed to private, “safety nets.”
Liberals love to outsource our personal human obligations to each other (whether it is charitable giving for the poor or parental responsibility for their childrens’ education) to the government. The government then not only forces people to be “charitable” (there’s a reason God says he “loves a cheerful giver”), which takes away any possibility of either accountability or cheerfulness, and then does a horrible job with that charity.
Big government is dehumanizing. Governments can NEVER be “compassionate”! Only people can be compassionate. And, as you say, forcing people to “give” leaves them angry; it also leaves the receivers ungrateful and feeling entitled to more. The human conduit, personal compassion, is missing.
