Puerto Rico Hurtling Toward Statehood to Help Dems
The Voice of Reason ^ | April 24, 2010 | Texas Peartree

Are you aware that your representation may soon be diluted in order to bolster the Democrat Party in Congress? House Resolution 2499, The Puerto Rico Democracy Act, would allow residents there to again vote on their political future. If a bare plurality (as few as a third-plus-one) wants statehood, then the process of adding a Spanish-speaking state will begin in earnest. Polls have shown that Puerto Ricans want the status quo of a commonwealth relationship with the US without statehood and the related taxation. However, the Dems in Congress do not care what the Puerto Ricans want.

Will the will of the people matter? Don't be silly. The sponsors of H.R. 2499 have set their goal as statehood, with two Democrat Senators and 6 or 7 Democrat Congressmen. Hey, maybe they could limit the damage from the November elections if they move quickly enough!

The vote imagined in H.R. 2499 would put Puerto Rico on the path to statehood with only a plurality of the vote. In other words, if 34% vote for statehood, 33% for Commonwealth and 33% for independence, then statehood would become the outcome. This was not the case with the last two states to enter the Union; Alaska and Hawaii.

With the expanding welfare state, the economics of adding this Spanish-speaking state are awful. The average income for Puerto Rica is 1/3rd lower than our poorest state: Mississippi. The welfare rolls would be enormous as poverty is calculated on national averages without respect to differences in cost-of-living.

No matter. Millions of jobs will be created for translating documents into Spanish...

Okay, who wants to be the one to tell Black Democrats that their party has been unfaithful and is about to leave them for the senorita in the corner?

It's nothing more than a move for political favor by the dimocrat's (PERIOD)

Nothing would be gained but a higher deficit IMO.

Although they get enough from us as it is.

Okay! Be ready, it all depends on whether or not the senorita wants to go home with the Dems.

I don’t see why we keep them as a commonwealth anymore anyway. We just keep funneling money to them and for what? They don’t really like Americans or America.

I doubt PR will vote for statehood.
The economically productive do NOT want to pay Federal taxes.
The non economically productive who are dependents on the economically productive do not want their heads of household to pay Federal taxes.

I got a new question... as per the current law, is ObamaCare the law of the land in PR in 2014?

As a Puerto Rican I am getting to believe more and more that there are in fact many racist on this site

Puerto Ricans by a vast majority have died defending this Country our Country from the time it became part of the USA, there are problems on the island the same as in Louisiana, Mississippi, New York, California and other like minded bleeding heart liberal states, that with a Paternalistic attitude decided that those programs, you deride, should become part of the Puerto Rican psyche.

We never demanded them, not Operation Bootstrap, no English as a Second Language, none of that, it was pushed on us by those Bleeding Heart White Liberals, that always know what is best for the downtrodden minority.

So yes in this case I am most definitely blaming Whitey.
