I don't know if this exists anymore but years ago someone who should know told me there was a bank in New York where various countries were assigned locked bins for gold bullion. Countries could then make transfers of gold without any of the bars needing to leave the bank. It's called the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and yes, it still exists.

Touring the Gold Vault doesn’t mean the Gold isn’t filled with Tungsten

I think youve got your tinfoil beanie on just a tad tight. The rumors about Fort Knox gold being gone or fake are almost as old as Fort Knox itself. This sounds like the plot for another National Treasure movie!

MFP what if the tungsten rumors are a conspiracy to get amateurs to sell ETFs and physical gold?

Get a real source for your conspiracy theory and then we'll talk.
I concur with McGruff. And also, Happy Thanksgiving.

Apparently Tungsten weighs the same as Gold.
Besides, if American can elect a Kenyan, with no experience, who is to say the Chinese might not just take our word for it.

Good call. I was given to think they weighed the same but, it does look close enough for government work.
Happy Thanksgiving.

I would remind you, that it is possible to “discuss” without “arguing”.
Free Republic is about discussion.
Do discussions get “heated” at times..yes.
Do we need to resort to antagonistic posts just because we can? No.

There is a Chinese tungsten smelter selling tungsten coin blanks...just plate them with gold and go. Dig a little and you will find their website.
A plated blank (flat disc) isn’t a coin. Coining tungsten is not realistic.

Given the character of our political leaders (eg. Barney Frank) I just always assumed the gold had vanished from Ft. Knox.
For me the surprise would be if the gold was still there.
