I don’t think he was communist or nazi. He was a lefty, certainly, and a Pom (not American). And J Edgar Hoover did make it impossible for him to return to the United States after the war, when he returned to the UK for a visit.

He did get caught up in the McCarthy situation, but then so did most of Hollywood.

Being in J Edgar Hoover’s bad books doesn’t necessarily make Charlie Chaplain anti-American. In my opinion J Edgar Hoover was one of the greatest unhanged villains of American history, and it was a travesty that he was allowed to shape the FBI for so long.

Modern Hollywood is far more dangerous to America than Charlie Chaplain ever was.
