“Glenn Beck Blasts America’s Youth As The “Me” Generation. WOW...”
Amen Brother Beck.
I went to a grade-school soccer event in the past week.
One of my relatives couched the winning team.
And I heard him admit that he had his team lay back in the closing
minutes so “they could score a goal or two”, as his team was ahead
by (IIRC) 5-0 in the closing minutes. Thus the team let the lagging
team get in a few easy goals.
It was a kindly geture to a team with less-than-good players.
The lesson left for my relative’s team may be one of mercy/kindness
in dealing with a “loyal opponent” in a sporting match.
But I did ask myself:
“What does this say to the winning team if/when a REAL opponent
bent on oppossing, nay, destroying the USA...will they go in full-bore
in order to win an unconditional surrender?”
Sure this is just a question from a foolish observer.
But I wonder if it will have an effect decades hence when a generation
will be called on to perform feats that equal or exceed those of
“The Greatest Generaion”.
Which, IMHO, includes the “point of the spear” guys/gals that are
at this hour, fending lonely outposts in Afghanistan while the
Commander-In-Chief takes day, after day, after endless days, to send
them support in the form of more “brothers/sisters in arms”.
IMO, I think this is a bad idea. I DO think this is different than fighting a war, because there is a thing called sportsmanship. However, it's a bad idea because I think there are better alternatives.
First, you put in your bench players. Let them get a shot. They could play at 100%. Second, you can try different tactics or even suboptimal strategies to see how well your players respond. I don't like the idea of insulting my opponent by "letting" them score.
I don't think a team should ever "rub it in." I think it produces bad karma. For the record, I'm a Titans fan and during the 59-0 blowout against the Patriots, I did not think that the Patriots were rubbing it in. I thought the Titans quit. Especially at a pro level, there's no crying or whining-- as in real life.
