The Gamaliel Foundation was founded in Chicago in 1968 to assist the Contract Buyers League, which worked to assist African-American home buyers in the city’s West Side. Gamaliel was reoriented to focus on community organizing when Gregory Galluzzo was hired as executive director in 1986. Seeing its basic function as training and developing leaders in low-income communities, Gamaliel’s goal is “to assist local community leaders to create, maintain and expand independent, grassroots, and powerful faith-based community organizations” that have the power to influence political and economic decisions that impact cities and regions. The name “Gamaliel” refers to the Biblical wise man who was a teacher to St. Paul (see Acts 5:38-39; and Acts 22:3), whom Saul Alinsky considered to be the first great congregation-based organizer.

Gamaliel Foundation works in the community organizing tradition of Alinsky, who began his work in Chicago with the Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council in 1939. Following Alinsky’s death in 1972, his Industrial Areas Foundation, under executive director Edward T. Chambers, moved toward a congregation-based organizing model, emphasizing training and leadership development. Gamaliel has developed along a similar path under the direction of Galluzzo, a former Roman Catholic priest who got his introduction to community organizing in the early 1970s in Chicago, where he worked with the Pilsen Neighborhood Community Council, mentored by such organizers as Tom Gaudette and John Baumann (the founder of PICO National Network).

Here is a video of the Gamaliel Foundation PRAYING to Barack Obama:

you need to add the Pocket Obama book to go with this!

Introducing ‘Pocket Obama’: Must-have Anthology of Obama Quotes
By Noel Sheppard
Created 2009-01-24 13:40
Just in case you can’t get through a day without some refreshing and uplifting words from the new president, the History Company has created the “Pocket Obama.”

This is a tiny, pocket-sized book filled with “quotations borrowed from Barack Obama’s speeches and writings.”

According to its creators, “It is an unofficial requirement for every citizen to own, to read, and to carry this book at all times.”

I kid you not.

As proudly described [1] at the History Company’s website (h/t NB reader John Pagonis):

Printed in a size that easily fits into pocket or purse, this book is an anthology of quotations borrowed from Barack Obama’s speeches and writings. POCKET OBAMA serves as a reminder of the amazing power of oratory and the remarkable ability of this man to move people with his words. His superb and captivating oratory style has earned comparisons to John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, and this historic collection presents words that catapulted his remarkable rise to the American Presidency. It is an unofficial requirement for every citizen to own, to read, and to carry this book at all times.

Includes themes of democracy, politics, war, terrorism, race, community, jurisprudence, faith, personal responsibility, national identity, and above all, his hoped-for vision of a new America. POCKET OBAMA is a portable, everyday primer for readers who want to examine the substance of his thought and reflect on the next great chapter in the American story.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: this has got to be a hoax. Well, the History Company [2] does indeed exist:

HISTORY COMPANY is a shopping destination like no other. It is a remarkable place where you can discover, enjoy, and find inspiration in the wonderful things that connect us to our past.

For over 10 years, we’ve offered an uncommon range of products that provide a brilliant glimpse of our uniquely American creativity and ingenuity, craftsmanship and style. In the process, we have been able to share the legacy of our roots in the form of fascinating, sometimes quirky gifts, for keeping or giving. At HISTORY COMPANY, the past becomes a present. Historian David Thalen wrote: “The challenge of history is to recover the past and introduce it to the present.” That sums up the mission of HISTORY COMPANY.
For ten years they’ve been selling historical items like White House furnishings, models, and of course books. However, as the only thing Obama has done so far is get elected, it seems a tad premature to view his speeches and writings as historic, doesn’t it?

After all, he could end up being a terrible president, right?

I guess the good folks at History Company aren’t concerned about this, as the minimum purchase of “Pocket Obamas” is ten.

It seems they think people just can’t get enough Obama.

I wonder if they’re considering making Obama soap for those who can’t do without The One even while they shower. Maybe a dashboard figurine, too, so that you can have him near you when you’re driving.

Stay tuned.

*****Update: As NBer mvfreeman marvelously pointed out [2] in the comments section...

This is eerily similar to Mao’s Little Red Book.

http://en.wikipedia.... [3]

Among the most widely printed books in history, Quotations had an estimated 5 to 6.5 billion copies printed during Mao’s attempt to transform Chinese society. The book’s phenomenal popularity may be due to the fact that it was essentially an unofficial requirement for every Chinese citizen to own, to read, and to carry it at all times during the later half of Mao’s rule, especially during the Cultural Revolution [4].

During the Cultural Revolution, studying the book was not only required in schools but was also a standard practice in the workplace as well. All units, in the industrial, commercial, agricultural, civil service, and military sectors, organized group sessions for the entire workforce to study the book during working hours. Quotes from Mao were either bold-faced or highlighted in red, and almost all writing, including scientific essays, had to quote Mao.

To defend against the theory that it would be counter-productive, it was argued that understanding Mao’s quotes could definitely bring about enlightenment to the work unit [5], resulting in production improvement to offset the time lost.

Yikes. That IS scary!!!

Unbelievably stupid... which is why allowing the common folk to have any say in government is a truly stupid idea.

Maybe that explains why I find myself more and more aligned with Alexander Hamilton’s thinking regarding that very issue. ;-)

The problem with representative government is that

a) it is not based upon the natural form of human social organization (i.e. the family);

b) most people are not intellectually capable of understanding the issues involved in making the decisions required to govern, and

c) most people are sheeplike followers, which makes them prey for smooth-tongued demagogues.

Eventually, all republics degenerate into mob rule as one charismatic demagogue seizes the power of the mobs and establishes a cult of personality. So long as a given republic is small and limited in its power, such a tyranny can be escaped or contained. But in a world like ours, where continent-spanning empires wield the power to kill and oppress people on a vast scale, the danger of a “people’s leader” coming to power via the ballot box is just too great.

A Christian king is limited in power politically by his coronation oath, and militarily by the loyalty of his independently-armed vassals. Should a given king transgress his oath, the Church may sanction him or withdraw his authority to govern in the name of God, thus ending the duty of his subjects and vassals to obey him; in such cases, on or more of his vassals may legitimately take up arms against him and restore lawful government.

There are problems with ANY form of human government. Our democratic republic flourishes as long as the people hold to their traditional religious virtues.

Our public educational system is terribly flawed and corrupt in this respect. The breakdown of the traditional family is also another MAJOR factor.

Every country is controlled by a political and financial elite. Our country has flourished because it has until recently been controlled by an elite that paid lip service to the traditions and values of Western, Christian civilization. However, this is no longer the case. The People -- that is, those who are the most skillful at controlling the people -- run the show now.

The only solution is to let it all come down. Once the power of the State collapses, natural leaders will arise from within the various ethnic tribes and will lead them in competition with one another for resources and territory. A few generations of warlords will pass before these various tribal arrangements become sanctioned by the Church, and we'll be back to monarchy again. Sic transit gloria mundi.

It is quite clear to me that much of the population of this country will only learn the hard way. How that exactly occurs remains to be seen.

I stay alert and active, but my overriding trust is in God. ;-)

Huge argument (same video) on this thread -— whether they are saying, “God” or Obama.”
Some think it is a trap forthe right & Beck??

I distinctly here “Obama,” but not every time in the refrain.Sometimes I think I do hear “God” also.
