"Our belief was that if GM retooled and reinvented itself for the 21st century, it would be good for American workers, good for American manufacturing, and good for America's economy," The free market could have done that with no direct cost to the taxpayer. The problem for Obama would have been the UAW may very well have ended up out on the street as GM was sold piece meal, the best facilities and tools going to other auto manufacturers like Toyota and Honda.
The truth is, he wanted to save GM-host for the UAW-malignancy.
