Credit union membership provides a 25% monthly Sprint discount & much more

Here's a special, somewhat unusual deal I ran across that I want FReepers to know about. If you use it, please give something back to Free Republic to help with the fund drive.

A credit union anyone can belong to, named Alliant Credit Union has an agreement with Sprint that likely surpasses any other cell phone discounts you may have. The deal:

- 25% off plans without push-to-talk or unlimited voice minutes
- $50 credit for EACH phone on your plan
- Free setup
- Free activation
- Free shipping
- Anytime minutes used only between 7 AM and 7 PM
- Get an extra $25 per account transferred by naming a friend already with Sprint as a referrer (They get $50 until 10/30/09)

What is amazing is that with one of their family plans (Everything Data Family), you can have 3000 minutes, unlimited Sprint-to-Sprint calls, data, text, and GPS navigation for 5 people with smartphones for only $34.50 a person. Sharing the same with a pool of 1500 minutes is only $28.50 a person. All phones Sprint has are available (however, you may need to put in a ZIP code for a major city to see all phones that can be sent to you).

How do you get this, when a credit union requires belonging to a geographical area or a special group? Easy, you do something that will make you cringe, but then you promise yourself to send in the same amount to Free Republic to counter what you do.

You merely need to sign up with the National PTA to meet the membership requirement for Alliant Credit Union. Once you have an account with them, you can legitimately use the Sprint discounts without fear of having them "undone" later.

This also works for anyone currently with Sprint--you don't have to only switch from other carriers.

The National PTA membership for one year is $25. After the first year, you simply don't renew, because you won't lose the credit union membership once qualified.

Note that you also need $5 to open the credit union account and that you need to make at least one transaction a year with them to keep it from going inactive. However, they have a marvelous free service in which they provide a quarterly credit score profile to you. I've never had another banking institution that bent over backwards as much as Alliant!

FYI, Sprint is supposedly coming out with the HTC Hero in October, the hottest new Android OS (Linux based) phone, already out in Europe.

I was an early adopter of the G1, the very first Android OS phone, 10 months ago now (see my FR home page). I really love the open source Android OS, and wouldn’t buy a phone with any other system now. I can use my G1 as a modem to tether my laptop to T-Mobile 3G, in emergency situations, which you can’t do with most OS’s/carriers.

Anyway thanks for the links. I frequent the Android OS forums and websites, so stay pretty up to date on the upcoming phones. The HTC Hero right now is the hottest Android phone. If you want Android news, I would suggest www.androidandme.com and www.phandroid.com and I think the best android forum site is www.androidcommunity.com plus the supergeek wizards of rooting Android phones (I rooted mine) and developing the many alternative free roms or builds available free on the internet, reside at XDA-developers.com

I’ll be checking out the HTC Hero when it comes out, although personally I prefer a physical keyboard. It is hoped the much faster Snapdragon processor will be out in the next year or so on an Android phone with a Qwerty keyboard. That would be my dream phone.
