The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has ruled that the State of Georgia may not use drivers license photo ids or Social Security numbers to verify the eligibility of those casting ballots in that state.
Loretta King, acting assistant attorney general of the Justice Departments civil rights division, said that requiring prospective voters to submit to such scrutiny at the polls would be humiliating and tend to reduce voter turnoutcontravening the Administrations policy of ensuring that all have access to the right to vote.
King went on to cite the disproportionate impact on those without easy access to these forms of documentation. Those who cannot read may not be able to obtain drivers licenses because they cant pass the written exam. Those who cannot show a valid birth certificate cant obtain a valid Social Security number.
The need for such close scrutiny was challenged as excessively burdensome by the DOJ. We dont require this level of documentation to be elected president, King observed. Why should the lesser task of merely voting for president be subjected to a rigorous standard?

obviously she's never stepped foot in a Mass. Registry of Motor Vehicles.
Just getting things set up for the 2010 election.
I'm sure the Georgia law made it possible for people to get ID's not tied to Driver's licenses. Since one must be a legal CITIZEN to vote, anyone born here in the US would have access to a birth certificate, or some record of birth.
As for the comment about having to show ID being humiliating and reducing voter turnout, it is patently ridiculous. We're required to show ID for any number of activities in which we're involved, from bank transactions to airline travel. I don't see that people are staying away from either of those activities because of having to show an ID is intimidating.
D’OH!! Fell for it, because it sounded absolutely like something That One’s administration would do!
I know, the Semi News people make it so darn close and I don’t think I could be surprised anymore by what this joker in the WH does!
You got me this time! Prolly because I am in Ga. and I am tired of hearing how burdensome it is to produce an ID to vote.
But try buying a drink in Dawson County at my age (55) without an ID. It ain’t gonna happen. Wonder if they still do that in North Fulton?
That’s the problem...they DID do it - it’s the quotes that are satirical.
Headline says it all....
Obama Administration Overturns
The Dick-tater will do what he wants, to hell with the legitimate voters.
Should say Obama disenfranchises concerned legitimate voters
by letting just anyone vote, and however many times they want.
Tell me...what is fair about this to legal voters?
“States have a right to conduct elections how they see fit.”
Nope. Not all states. Only southern states that by law have to submit changes to election procedures to the DOJ for approval. Looks like GA’s got shot down.
This is exactly right, actually. The Zero Administration wants everyone to vote. Especially those that don't have the right to sufferage.
To WHOM?
What the hell.....are these genuinely creepy people trying to keep elections corrupt for some reason?
SINCE WHEN IS SHOWING AN ID A HARDSHIP?
This is really getting scary.
“King went on to cite the disproportionate impact on those without easy access to these forms of documentation.”
Don’t you have to have ID to get welfare?
Georgia should sue; and then do it anyway..(heck he has no say in local and state elections, anyway..)!!!
This will go to the Supreme Court and as the court stands now, will be overturned.
They did do it.
They just didn’t explain it as well as I did.
We dont require this level of documentation to be elected president,
Well, they’ve sure proven that! Where’s the BC?
Apart from that...the voter registration process MUST validate a person’s eligibility to vote, which may take a period of time. That would support a notion of establishing a cutoff time, ahead of an election, by which a person must have registered in order to vote. This would seem to rule out the ‘same day’ registrations (regardless of provisional ballots, IMO).
With an effective registration process, we are still left with the problem of proper ID at the polling station. The signature comparison process used in OH seems to be a marginally acceptable solution, given the amateur nature of the poll workers.
Fingerprints, maybe? Retinal scans? DNA? All of these speak to some sort of comparative database against which the realtime data is cast, to assure ID. An idea to which I’m opposed, generally speaking, as far too invasive, too ‘big brother-ish’.
I’m open to suggestions on this one...
*shakes head* Lord, I just hope several million of the folks who voted for this clown have woken up from their star struck hypnosis, and will turn against him in 2012!
The only difference between what you serve up and the mainstream mania is yours is so much more fattening; where they merely toss the salad on the same plate every day, you mix up the dressing, heavy on vinegar and loaded with fat and flesh us out.
Yeah, I know how humiliated I am whenever a cashier asks to see my ID when I use my credit/debit card.
