This is standard operation procedure for politicians (leftist ones in particular) who are faced with opponents who are on the correct side of an issue.

Since he knows the vast majority of the population agrees with the sentiments and ideas of the Tea Parties he CAN'T oppose them...so he ignores them.

Marginalize the enemy, play down their importance and make them seem like a fringe group.
