Fred Thompson in 1994: Let The Woman Decide - Monday, April 09, 2007 @ 3:06:23 PM
|
During his first run for the U.S. Senate, Fred Thompson said in an interview to a libertarian Republican newsletter that the ultimate decision to have an abortion "must be made by the woman."
The comments were made in the July/August issue of Republican Liberty, the official newsletter of the Republican Liberty Caucus.
In the interview, Thompson was asked: "Some conservatives got flustered by your comments on abortion and Roe vs. Wade. Would you like to explain your position on abortion?"
Thompson answered: "Government should stay out of it. No public financing. The ultimate decision must be made by the woman. |

If you like, there are many more of us who can become just as vicious about Duncan Hunter.
It 's remarks and tactics like yours, that not only hurt the GOP, but the conservative cause.
fyi, i do NOT believe that "rudy the RINO" can carry any dixie state.

Listen, I would vote for Thompson in a heartbeat if he’s the republican candidate. That’s more than you can say if Rudy ends up as the candidate. Whether Thompson was pro-choice at one time or other is not a deal breaker for me. Apparently it is for you since you seem to be avoiding that possibility. When you have an open mind regarding ALL the candidates, then we can have a serious discussion.
The Borg? Or Skynet?
I didn’t say that they weren’t pro life personally, I was insinuating that most politicians wish the topic would not be discussed. Has nothing to do with their personal philosophy. It’s just that most politicians don’t put a heavy emphasis on the subject as there’s nothing much they can do about it. Tell me, how many politicians voted on the for or against abortion in your lifetime. It’s a supreme court that’s screwed up. They should never have gotten involved, neither should a president. It’s a states issue, constitutionally. I don’t care what you might think. Even murder is a state issue.
You asked the question of how I would know that. I answered.
The issue of Thompson’s stance on abortion has been settled by his past record. The evidence shows he is pro-life.
And the fact that you question it in the face of the historical evidence shows you’re not convinced. If you’re not convinced when his voting record shows clearly what he is and that his appearances on national television shows he is against Roe vs. Wade, then nothing will convince you.
The rumors that he was ever prochoice have all been debunked by prolife leaders. The American Spectator has printed other reports that claim that it was Evangelicals for Romney that put out the smear. The recent smear in the American Spectator was dated April 7, 2007. There was no evidence from 1994 cited, just heresay.
This is not about prochoice-prolife. This is about dishonest yellow journalism.
Tomorrow will bring a new smear. And if I find it is unsubstantiated, then I care not what the issue is, I care only that the con artists that promulgate the smear get called on it.
Duncan Hunter for President!
What on earth is your problem with Thompson? He's more conservative than Giuliani, he's a great communicator and he has a good track record in the Senate.
Why beat him up?
I'm going to vote Republican in '08, I don't care who the nominee is. That includes John McCain!
Stop beating the hell out of Republicans! Everybody! We have Democrats to defeat!
And in Guiliani's tortured logic, a "strict constructionist" could just as easily uphold Roe v. Wade as overturn it. That has to make you wonder what he thinks the term "strict constructionist" means.
“And in Guiliani’s tortured logic, a ‘strict constructionist’ could just as easily uphold Roe v. Wade as overturn it. That has to make you wonder what he thinks the term ‘strict constructionist’ means.”
If Rudy’s logic is tortured, so was Alito’s and Roberts’ before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Both justices claimed strict constructionism implied a decision that could go either way—either to reverse Roe vs. Wade or to uphold it because of already long-established precedence. Neither would tip his hand before the Senate as to how he would vote. Rudy’s position is exactly the same the WH itself uses to coach its nominees to get them by the Committee.
To me, it shows a lack of leadership.
“To me, it shows a lack of leadership.”
Saying Rudy lacks leadership is like saying Bush is not a Texan. But don’t let the truth get in the way of your prejudices.
did you read the link to the rest of the article? am i missing something here?? he SAYS it is up to the woman!?
romney and thompson are in the same field, IMHO. they both were pro-choice and are now trying to give the impression they are pro-life. sounds like wolf-in-sheep's clothing to me. i wouldn't trust either of them to have a backbone and make wise moral choices for a country. romney thought that he was going to clinch the deal getting someone from NRTL to endorse or support him. NRTL hasn't exactly been forthcoming in backing the real abortion ban bills, either. so, where does that put them? romney was hoping it would hook more votes? (considering the mentality of the average voter, it may have.) thompson's veiw on it being the woman/s choice??? sounds like a way to hook liberal votes and be a sqwish if you are really pro-life. where would the civil rights be today if they had had that attitude toward civil rights and slavery??!!! he is liberal, like mccain and gulianni, wearing the republican sticker that is easily removed at their earliest convenience. BEWARE!
I believe that there are some trolls on this and other threads trying to divide the conservative and RINO wings of the party.
Ad hominems are the first sign. Attacking candidates without facts is another sign. I could go on, but I have been asked not to feed the trolls.
Pro-choice is the new conservative.
Fred’s position is that there should be no government position on the issue of abortion, so he doesn’t want abortion to be made illegal.
He’s pro-choice.
His record shows what he believes. Perfect pro-life voting record in the Senate.
