WHERE DO YOU STAND, MR. STRICKLAND?
Most of Thursday's program focused on the question of Ted Strickland's stance on pedophilia, based on his vote on a 1999 House Resolution.
The language in HR 107 is not ambiguous--it's a complete condemnation of a study that suggests pedophilia might have some positive effects on children.
The United States House of Representatives felt so strongly that a stand needed to be taken against such a suggestion that they came together in a bipartisan effort to pass the resolution 355-13.
Ohio Gubernatorial candidate Ted Strickland was one of the 13 who decided he could not vote "yea" and join the condemnation.
The following is what Congressman Strickland refused to say "YES!" to:
"Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring), That Congress--
(1) condemns and denounces all suggestions in the article `A Meta-Analytic Examination of Assumed Properties of Child Sexual Abuse Using College Samples' that indicate that sexual relationships between adults and `willing' children are less harmful than believed and might be positive for `willing' children (Psychological Bulletin, vol. 124, No. 1, July 1998);
(2) vigorously opposes any public policy or legislative attempts to normalize adult-child sex or to lower the age of consent;
(3) urges the President likewise to reject and condemn, in the strongest possible terms, any suggestion that sexual relations between children and adults--regardless of the child's frame of mind--are anything but abusive, destructive, exploitive, reprehensible, and punishable by law; and
(4) encourages competent investigations to continue to research the effects of child sexual abuse using the best methodology, so that the public, and public policymakers, may act upon accurate information."

This 1999 vote became and issue in December when Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bryan Flannery brought it up during his campaign for the Democrat nomination in Ohio. Flannery felt it was important enough to point out during the primary election, so clearly it's important enough to adress during the general election campaign.
The question isn't whether or not Strickland actually supports pedophilia; the question is why he wouldn't want to make a loud public statement that affirms it. Was he concerned that he wouldn't get NAMBLA's support in his reelection effort?
Rather than join the other 355 members who voted "yea", Strickland voted "present". Which means that he was there for the vote--that he hadn't been absent from the vote--but that he was not in favor of the resolution.
The House almost unanimously decided that the study in question, conducted by the American Psychological Association, posed a great threat to society. They believed that with such an authoritative body concluding that adult sex with minor children might be beneficial to certain kids, people might be led to believe that pedophilia is anything less than abusive and destructive to children.
HR 107 sent a strong message to America that we will not waver in our support of children nor in our vigilant fight against child molestors...but Strickland chose not to sign his name to that message.
Do with this information what you wish...but don't dismiss it as some "conservative Republican trick". Remember, it was Democrat Bryan Flannery who brought it to light...and it is absolutely fair game for discussion.
Especially when Democrats are playing the "morality and ethics" cards in this mid-term election season over the Mark Foley scandal.

This whole Foley mess is a prime example. Democrats see nothing wrong with having sex with underage pages, yet they feign outrage at Republicans for even approaching such behavior. Republicans should call them on it. Again and again.
