I just found (finally) the Fry's in Atlanta! It's the only brick-n-mortar I could find a Parrot CK3100 at.

:O)

Alternative evil Fry's site:

(The place sucks money out of your wallet just driving by!)

I pass a Fry's twice a day, on the way to work and back. (Shudder)

Step 1. We admitt we are powerless over Fry's; that our lives had become unmanageable.

And, and yet although I pass one every day...I stood outside on Black Friday at 5:00am, like an idiot, to save $15 bucks on some ram. I am weak.

"The only bad part is paying the power bill for these puppies."

Like I said in the last thread, I'm looking into putting together the same type of "folding farm" as in that picture above. The idea in this link looks like a good option for the power. Make ATX Y Cable by splicing two cables together so you can run two MB off a single Power Supply.

Sweeeeeeet! Is the power that much more for a farm? From the FAQ:

How much power/money is used by keeping a F@H running 24/7 on a computer? Roughly, a CPU uses about as much power as a watt light bulb. Here's a report on computer power management from Lawrence Berkeley government labs, and there are other references on the web you can find. Although power supplies on most computers are rated at 400 watts, average usage is lower.
On average, a Pentium-type computer uses about 100 watts (if the monitor is off). So, the daily difference between off and running F@H is about 24x100 = 2.4 kWh. At $0.15 per kWh ( from PG&E here in California), this works out to about $0.36 per day. In general, lighting and climate control use a much larger share of household power than computers do. So the best bet for cutting costs and conserving energy would be to turn off lights, turn off your computer monitors (which use more power than a CPU), and turn down the heat.

A question, if you please!

I'm currently folding p764_vin 3.3-0.4nopbc. The link at http://vspx27.stanford.edu/psummary.html says that it is worth 39 points and is 100 frames.

It has sent me 500 frames. Do I still only get 39 points for that, do you know?

I've noticed that there are "steps" within frames, right now I'm working on 761 which has also has 100 frames, but is worth 135 points. But, the log shows that I've got 500,000 steps to complete.

I don't have a gui client immediately available to verify that against, but I'll wager that's where the confusion comes in.

I'm using my two home folders to help keep the house warm. I heat 90% with Firewood with a 1500 watt wall heater in the bedroom and a little 800 watt one to help in the Kitchen.

These two machines are doing 250 or so watts 24/7. It never gets all that hot here in the summer so that shouldn't matter much.

More power savings can be had, if the PC is using a shared hard drive (I've got 5 PC's now using drive space on an external USB drive), I've pulled the video card, sound card, floppy and hard drive out of them, so they're stripped to the bone.

If one is really serious about tweaking power settings, you can get variable speed fans, and use the "standby" feature to shut down the network card, when it's not in use.

btw... the experiment worked, and the $3 laptop has now contributed 92 points.

HardOCP, here we come. Ha! I would be glad just to outfold SISD!

SISD is definately out folding us, but if we can keep getting more stragglers to overcome the eventual drop off, we may be able to close the gap with them some. I may be able to get some more in but throttle them back so I don't cook 'em.

Thanks for joining us. I'll add you to the ping list if your F@H name is the same as your FR name.

amigatec, can you remember Amiga computers? I see from your profile that you are Linux based.

Are the P166s fast enough to run Linux? They sure don't do well under XP bloatware.

"On the global front, Free Republic Folders is now listed at # 487"

Movin' on up - YEAH!

Unfortunately - I'm not.  My 2nd CPU (a P-II, IBM box) crashed and burned yesterday - won't even power on.  Probably the power supply, but I might have cooked the CPU or MB.  It had only been folding about a week or so.  What's strange is that my main system (which I built) cooked my Gainward GForce 4 (TI4200 with 128mb ram) about a week after I started it on folding.  The video card has it's own fan onboard, and the system chasis is aluminum and never gets over 92o, and the AMD Athlon XP 2100 processor has a great cooler keeping it around 120o (both measured in Farenheit) - weird.  I never had any problem with hardware before (and I don't overclock - need stability for my business - of course my main system is over 3 years old and I won't even talk about the P-II, LOL).

I didn't have any other apps running on the P-II except NAV & Zone Alarm.   I run all sorts of business programs on the AMD, but nothing graphics intensive.  I don't have time to troubleshoot them right now (I just installed a back-up video card for the main system & continued folding and working, (like now - posting to FR, heheh).  The other one's offline though.  When I have time, I'll install Mepis (Linux) to another old system which has an older AMD processor and get it online.

I've got to get more CPU's online - I'm stuck in the low 70s rank on the team, but I'll have to wait until I can afford an 8 port KVM switch before I can try and bring on more.  (We might be in 1st place by then, LOL).

But I can brag about folding more WUs than all but the top 38 on our team + BoT who has an amazing 117 and is not in the top 46.  (I know, I know - it's the points, stupid, LOL).

Anyway - my congrats to all FR folders - we're whipping DU butt - they'll never catch us.

The downside to folding is that it will certainly stress test computers. Sorry to hear of your thermal issues.

If you build your own machines, you won't have the same issues again if you use Antec Cases and power supplies. For the CPU Zalman CPU/Northbridge coolers take the day.

One of my folders is an Athlon 2700 with 3 case fans, 2 in the power supply plus a thermaltake volcano on the cpu running a massively overclocked Geforce 6800.

"you won't have the same issues again if you use Antec Cases and power supplies"

Thanks for the advice.  Your system sounds very cool (pun intended, heheh).

I don't think it was thermal issues on my main system (the AMD), but I don't know what zapped my video card.  Here's my setup (before I replaced the video card with an spare older one):

I have an aluminum Lian Li case with Plexiglas side and 3 case fans and speed screws and slide out MB tray and removable 5 drive HD cage and removable floppy cage, an Enermax 350w EG365P-FC ATX Power Supply with intake & exhaust fans, a built-in south-bridge fan on a Soyo SY-KT333 Dragon Ultra Platinum MB, and the Gainward video card had it's own fan.   The AMD Athlon XP 2100 has a copper core oversize cooler and fan.  I use round cables for both of the 40gb hard drives and floppy and CDRW and DVDRW so as not to impede air flow.  I only have 1 Corsair DDR-333Mhz 512MB PC2700 CAS2 Heat Spreader ram card for now.
