is "RAT speak" for "cut and run"---Murtha is an 'old fool' who is up for election in 2006 and has to toe the 'RAT" line for money and other support---Pittsburgh, in my state of PA., is a "RAT" city and deserves Murtha-- with his resume on the services and defense he should know better than to say such a thing when his beloved? He was nearly in tears because he knew he was doing wrong. He knows appeasement and pulling out now is death to the military. A "date certain" with death. The terrorists all over the world would rejoice and ululate themselves into a frenzy. Attacks on Americans and American interests would increase in number and intensity. "The Great Satan can be defeated!" they would scream as they cut off the heads of innocents. The open borders of the southwest would be look like a hurricane evac route, to terrorists intent on doing their nefarious acts. He either believes his party's own propaganda or he's an old fool who's been in there too long........
Why? His voting record is pretty clear,his votes on foreign policy and defense and more liberal than two thirds of his peers. Geography has nothing to do with it. He votes as a liberal despite his portrayal as a hawk.
The guy has been a hawkish type in general.
No he hasn't, the guy was a staunch Dean supporter. He voted for war in Iraq but has been a critic ever since.
The terms "hawk" doesn't describe Murtha at all. He's entitled to his opinion, he's earned that in spades but he's not entitled to the bs opinion that you can't favor the war if you aren't a veteran and he deserves scorn for this pull out immediately crap because he is a Vietnam Vet.
Screw him.

Yes it does. He's been a "hawk" several time now, then a "hawk" who "suddenly" turned against the war. Then we don't hear anything about him for awhile and he turns up as a "hawk" who "suddenly" turns against the war. Then Bill Murray kidnaps "Phil" the groundhog...
I thought John Glen was a sell-out too.
John Glenn DID sell out --- on the Impeachment of Clinton..
Clinton got his vote for the promise to send Glen back into space on that ridiculous mission....
I've heard that Glenn was not even popular among his astronout "buddies"..... It appears he was a self serving prick his whole NASA and Political life.

I was at Camp Lejeune when Garwood's trial was going on. I was with Echo 2/2 at the time. Garwood always arrived in an old Chevy, I think it was a 55 or 57.

Well said. And "Amen" to what makes this country really work. The older I get the more I appreciate what the Marine Corps did for me.

I was in the Corps from 1978 to 1982. I joined because I wanted to be a 'grunt' and serve in Vietnam. I often regret not having been in combat. People tell me that I am 'lucky' I wasn't and I suppose that in a sense that is true but I didn't join the Marine Corps to sit on the sidelines, I would have preferred to be in the game.
A guy I work with is a Marine Corps Vietnam Veteran from 1966-67. I would tell him that he was a Marine, I was in the Marine Corps.
I also hear people say that the Corps, after Vietnam, was not up to snuff and that the Marines from that era were inferior compared to predecessors. And some have said that because of this I don't have the 'right' to express my opinion.
I suppose that these things have made me slightly bitter.
I didn't get to choose what era or under what circumstances that I served.
But I've come to see that some of the people who did serve in combat and may have served in the 'real' Marine Corps have been disappointing.
I guess that's human nature.
Sorry for rambling, some of this stuff has been stuck in my craw for a long time and I probably didn't get my point across as well as I would have liked.

Whatever a man did from the ages of 18 to 23 ---- doesn't always determine the type man he'll become, once he "matures" and decides he wants more out of life that he has -- or feels the world owes him something more..
There are many very public characters that prove your point --- about those that may have served - and then turned out to be outright or borderline traitors or scum bags: John Kerry, Scott Ritter, John Glenn, Murtha, etc, etc....
Personally, I believe each of us is entitled only to be regarded as the man we have become -- not the man we were..
One exception - is those that were horribly wounded in the mind and spirit that they still remain a prisoner of their nightmares and will probably never be known for the man they could have been -- and must continue to receive the love of his friends for the man that he was... These are the saddest and most deserving veterans of all...
I believe I know what you're saying and how you feel..
I've NEVER been able to join any of the veterans organizations or attend any of the large "reunions" of our Battalion....
Not enough of the survivors or attendees, experienced the same experiences in the same manner - nor were they as close to men we lost as our small circle was..
We share only the era, uniform and love of the Corps -- but none us us saw the war in the same way....
I found it too depressing to attend the events, and even stopped attending the Birthday Balls...
The Balls were the most depressing, seeing all those bright eyed young warriors in Blues -- only reminded me of how old I had become - and how those we lost, looked so much like the young warriors at the Ball -- and will forever be that young.
I found that there were only a few of the men -- those I served most closely with, and those I never lost respect for -- are the only ones I continue to care to stay in contact with or to visit at The Wall....
You're wrong on one very important point.. There is only ONE Marine Corps... YOUR Marine Corps.. Anyone that enlisted, graduated boot camp, completed ITR, wore the uniform with honor and dignity and served their enlistment honorably -- is a Marine.. PERIOD....
