Blogbat, I totally agree.
It was an accident and really a freak accident at that I think. Lots of people put lead ropes on horses they can't catch until they get to the point where they are easily caught. Ropers used to (forty years ago, don't know now) put ropes on their horses to drag while they were in the corral or pasture - to teach them to not step on a rope.
Bottom line however, I doubt seriously any movie producer would use actual wild mustangs because of the danger to his crew and actors, and the unpredictability of the horses. They don't just run from handlers, they climb fences, bite and kick when cornered, etc.
A horse was a horse, of course, of course,
And no horse can walk with a lead rope of course
That was, of course, a negligent source who should be slapped upside their head.
Go right to the judge and fine the man
Just make it large enough so they'll understand.
That we don't want this to ever happen again.
From what I heard, another horse recently broke his leg so bad during filming they had to put it down. Rush this morning said, why don't they just quit feeding it and let it euphorically starve to death.
It is my opinion that directors couldn't care less about how dangerous a stunt is, as long as they get their "shot".
Case in point: the film "Twilight Zone: the Movie," in which actor Vince Morrow and two child actors were killed when the helicopter used in the film crashed on the set.
So what's a couple of horses? < /sarcasm >
