I am about to do some direct mail communications in my district in Western Carolina. I may just print up bumper stickers that say, "I'm mad as Zell, and I'm not going to take it anymore." and make those available to contributors to my campaign.

Hey, John,

Read on another thread that Zell Miller may be a NC boy, born in either Murphy or Andrews. If so, this is right down your alley! :)

I read Zell's very interesting biography. My memory is that Zell was born in North Georgia. Andrews and Murphy are both in my District, the 11th CD in North Carolina.

Zell's family home is in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia, about 25 miles south of my home, and visible from my front porch. The people hereabouts, both sides of the NC border, tend to be self-reliant, salt-of-the-earth folks.

Zell is very typical of the people his age in these parts, both the men and the women. For the female side of that, see the movie "Foxfire" starring Jessica Tandy. That is based on a real woman, Annie Nation.

Zell's speech was a masterpiece, full of great lines and delivered with strong and sincere passion.

One of the many noteworthy statements he made ...

Finally, Zell turned to the character contrast between John Kerry and George Bush. Here was his conclusion about Bush: "He is not a slick talker but he is a straight shooter and, where I come from, deeds mean a lot more than words. I have knocked on the door of this man's soul and found someone home, a God-fearing man with a good heart and a spine of tempered steel. The man I trust to protect my most precious possession: my family."

The contrast with the slick-talking, blowing-in-the-wind, empty soul who is his opponent could not be more stark.

We all need to ask ourselves not only which of these men we want to have as our Commander in Chief but which do we want appointing judges who will hold their seats on the bench for years to come.

IMHO, the two issues of national defense and the appointment of judges are the most critical of this election and will determine the very future of our nation, overshadowing all other concerns.

Very nice analysis, BB.

Zell did what enraged Americans (and the GOP) should be doing all over this country - outing the calumny of these Democrat liberals and their craven media enablers who have gotten away with their lies, corruptions and treasons for way too long. Naturally, most of the Lamestream Media is busy trying to cover up the damage Zell's pointblank volley caused on their bunched lines by referring to him as "angry", "over the top" and a "Lester Maddox racist".

But in their heart of hearts, they're sucking their thumbs in fear as they see their self-righteous world collapse around them and their nasty little Party implode.

I saw a very, VERY angry Marine standing there. The angrier he got, the straighter he stood and the more precise his language became. He wanted to make sure that no-one misunderstood what he was saying!!!!!

I wonder if he had been a DI while in the Marines.

Zell was a Sergeant in the Marines. I gather that is the equivalent of a permanent Drill Instructor.

Your bumper sticker IS an excellent idea, and is ABSOLUTELY going to pay off in many more ways than you now expect. After you mail the first couple of hundred, expect many requests for many (thousand?) more ......

But ... (the infamous "but" intrudes )

I'd specifically recommend you be more direct and "pithy" .

It will read better at a distance, and fit better on a bumper sticker, avoid copyright questions, and still invokes the original intent - while becoming a "positive" voice (implying action, i.e. "Vote!), rather than a "passive voice" of simply "taking it" if you use instead

"I'M MAD AS ZELL!
AND I WON'T TAKE IT ANYMORE "

Glad to see where it came from. I wrote this yesterday AM too based on the magnificient phrase. I love this picture of young Zell the Marine.

Mad as Zell

When he was a younger man,
He was a Marine.
Later it was politics,
Still that is his scene.
Yes a lifelong democrat,
But he saw it change.
Since he is a patriot,
He sure found it strange.
Democrats no longer care,
For what made us great.
So now he is speaking out,
Before it’s too late.
America needs leadership,
Not a flip and flop.
George Bush has Zell Miller’s vote,
Kerry we must stop!

Great article!

I'd like to think Zell's talking about me here too. Not exactly well-endowed in the "Conversational Arts" area of life. One more reason to like President Bush.

Thought he must have been. I would not want to cross him! After Zell's speech, Dick Cheney was somewhat anticlimatic and as a matter of fact - I lost interest in Cheney after about three minutes.

The conventions are just stage dressing anymore since we know by the time of the conventions who is running for the various parties. I remember Momma and Daddy watching and wondering what all the excitement was about.
