A Michigan hair salon broke state law by telling prospective transgender customers to stay away and visit a dog groomer instead, officials have ruled.
Studio 8 Hair Lab in Traverse City declared that anyone who did not identify as a man or woman was 'not welcome' in a Facebook post published in 2023.
'If a human identifies as anything other than a man/woman please seek services at a local pet groomer,' salon owner Christine Geiger wrote.
'You are not welcome at this salon. Period.'
Geiger also warned that staff might refuse to use customers' preferred pronouns and instead call them 'hey you.'
She insisted that the salon had the right to turn customers away, writing: 'This is America; free speech. This small business has the right to refuse services.'
Geiger also took aim at Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and House Bill 4744, which expanded the state's civil rights protections for LGBTQ people.
'Kiss my A** Governor Whitmer,' she wrote.
The posts sparked widespread backlash and prompted more than 20 complaints to the Michigan Department of Civil Rights between July and November 2023.
Three of those complaints, filed by people who saw the posts online, became the basis of the case against Studio 8.
None of the three had attempted to book an appointment or been refused service at the salon.
But Michigan law does not require someone to be personally turned away before a business can be found responsible for discriminatory advertising.
Michigan Department of Civil Rights spokesperson Katie Adrianse told the Daily Mail that the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act prohibits publishing a statement indicating that services will be denied because of someone’s gender identity or expression.

“The law is an ass.” - Charles Dickens..........
Michigan doesn’t have a law punishing businesses.
For turning you away foe being a gun owner.
I just googled; looks like the leftist mob ran this place out of business a couple years ago, after flooding it with horrible reviews.
No freedom of speech for the right!
Change the name to “Al Islam Hair Care”
Traverse city gets a little uppity sometimes, but I agree with this decision. But you might pi$$ off some Dog Groomers.
You might think this but various Civil Rights laws passed over the years has rendered our First Amendment protection of freedom of association moot.
You will associate with whomever the government tells you to associate with.
“We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone “
A better use of time and effort.
You WILL bake us the cake.
You WILL NOT send us to the dog groomers.
Why would you want a haircut from someone who doesn’t want to cut your hair?
“Cut the damn hair!”
Saw this on the net a time ago - and saved it. Succinct truth hurts.
“Not to be picky
But if you have a dicky
And want to be called Vicky
You are a sicky”
Seems more like the salon was addressing those who identify as a furry.
Where did you get that picture??? I gotta get one for my wife...
At the bottom of all this is the 14th Amendment. The slaves it helped are dead and buried now. Repeal it. It is how anchor babies were justified .
Only “waxings” for trans.
Hair salon broke law by warning transgender customers to stay away and go to a DOG GROOMER instead....
Were they transgender furries?
Thus the DOG GROOMER comment?
You never want to cut the hair or groom the mentally unstable with out getting a written waver of liability first.
That way when they wig out you are covered and its all on them...and possibly their VET ....
Leviticus 18:22: “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.”
Leviticus 20:13: “If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.”
We are a beauty salon and you ain’t not beauty so go someplace else
