25 boys competing in the kids' final of the 2022 US MULLET Championships proudly flaunt their funky flow as they go hair-to-hair in the hopes of being crowned 'best mullet'

The competition first ran in 2020 and has occurred every summer since - and now, it's time to cast your vote for your favorite among this year's finalists.

Voting for this year's kids' division began on Monday, and those looking to help pick a winner should do so soon, since it will close this Friday.

The competition was created by Michigan apparel and footwear store Bridge Street Exchange as a marketing idea. Owner Kevin Begola first launched the contest in his local town of Fenton, and after its success, he decided to expand it to a national event.

Now, he proudly calls himself 'the nation’s official mullet-ranking authority' after establishing 'a powerful platform within the mullet space.'

'The sponsor-friendly platform has engaged audiences in live event and digital formats, building an avid following,' a press release about the event claimed.

Some of the competitors in this year's contest include a young boy named Jack Grant, from Hosford, Florida, who has a mohawk on the top part of his head and a mullet on the bottom, and Zander Trainer, from Kennett, Missouri, who sports a mullet with fringe-style bangs.

Rustin Alphin, from Pocahontas, Arizona, appears to have the longest mullet in the competition.

Earlier this year, the competition teamed up with Major League Eating - who helped develop competitive eating through its Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest - in an attempt to 'expand' even further.

'We are excited to join forces with Major League Eating to expand the USA Mullet Championships to a host of new venues and fans,' said President Begola.

'MLE’s experience building a sponsorship-driven live-event brand will help support the rapid growth of the competitive mullet world.'

Interesting thoughts in this generation. Originally, mullets were seen in the ‘70s, with the hair a little long and “feathered” on the sides to make the head look like...well, a mullet fish. Mullets (the fish) had obviously large scales that overlapped and appeared to flow from the front to the back of the fish. ...not the distopian look that we’re seeing in the pictures.

Friends don't let friends get mullets. (T-shirts on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/265775819145)

The internet killed the mullet. Amen. Long live the mullet.

Mulletsgalore.com has been discontinued but you can still buy paraphernalia. It was back when websites didn't worry about copyrights, nor taking pictures of mullet-heads on the street.

http://www.mulletsgalore.com/

It looks like mulletjunky.com picked up where he left off but you really don't want to see what people looked like back then. It was like a plague that almost everyone had but nobody recognized it.

You would be surprised how many times I used the Golden Mean in mechanical design projects. Oh, Leonardo...

Exactly. These aren’t what we could have called mullets back then.

Let me guess, half of them are wearing madras shorts, the other half bell bottoms.

Some things that die should stay dead.

This style is traditionally associated with Florida man and suchlike. If you have an alligator in your pickup truck, then you probably have a mullet and bad teeth.

"Exactly. These aren’t what we could have called mullets back then."

Agreed. The hair (long enough to partially or completely cover the ears) was cut to various lengths on the sides. It looked "layered" or "feathered" and was combed towards the back dried with a blow dryer. It vaguely resembled scales from front to back on the sides. It was called a mullet later on, if I remember correctly, when it was going out of style ('80s and '90s).

On the distopian look with the hair cut very short with clippers on one or both sides, I first saw it in the '90s. Some of the women in the Midwest are still wearing it, more often those with drug problems. Some of the boys in those families also wear it.

I used to do/cut my own hair (still do, actually.. what is left of it 😜). (I remember I had messed up once and had to cut most of it off though.. early teen) I would brush the side to the front and trim it.

I don't recall ever using a blow dryer though.. I would let the sides dry while it was brushed to the front, then brush back after it had dried (although, the top I would brush back while wet). It came out nicely feathered (I had very soft hair, which I learned later, isn't a good thing later in life 😝, unless you like very low maintenance hair (or lack of)).
Same with the back, which always wanted to be fluffy/bushy.. I would brush it up until it was dry, then brush it down after it was dry, which straightened it out.

The back was past my shoulders, but the sides barely covered my ears.

Went to Uni, and lost interest in the mullet, and had a 'business' like haircut until I went into the military. After the military, I could NEVER stand any hair touching my ears, so it's been buzzed ever since.

Yeah, I went to Ft. Leonard Wood in ‘89 at the age of 31 and have kept it short ever since. :)

I guess the simple Mellinial/GenZ version of the retro-mullet is popular recently.. MUCH worse than what we wore :P
