Don't spin the Civil War
Washington Post ^ | 12.27.10 | E.J. DIONNE jR.

The Civil War is about to loom very large in the popular memory. We would do well to be candid about its causes and not allow the distortions of contemporary politics or long-standing myths to cloud our understanding of why the nation fell apart.

The coming year will mark the 150th anniversary of the onset of the conflict, which is usually dated to April 12, 1861, when Confederate batteries opened fire at 4:30 a.m. on federal troops occupying Fort Sumter. Union forces surrendered the next day, after 34 hours of shelling.

And you maintain that slavery was simply and “occasion?”

Yep. You don't get it because you don't want to or either don't have the mental flexibility to understand it. You see, you black people think that the entire world revolves around you, therefore, you believe that the entire reason for the War of Northern Aggression centered around black people. But I've got news for you: it ain't so. Replace black people in the antebellum north-South equation with spotted elephants and you have the same results.

BTW dogz, I'm assuming that, since you claim to be a conservative, you are against the unconstitutionally federal intrusion into our lives via obamacare. Just nod your head if that's correct.

If that's the case, how can you support the unconstitutional federal intrusion into legal Southern labor practices?

The whole point of vilifying the South is to break resistance, which is buttressed by the South, to the Marxist takedown of America. And the South-baiters on this thread are working that grift for all they're worth. Why they are still here is what I wonder at. They're doing Bill Clinton's politics on Jim Robinson's website.

And all the while claiming to be such staunch conservatives!

The fact that it was nearly 30 years ago isn’t of much consequence, eh.

You don't think so? Bullshit. If it wasn't for all of you damn marxist hippies from 30 years ago we wouldn't be where we are today.

You ain't a cowboy. You are a Bull **** boy.

You liberals always fall back on those Alinsky tactics, don't you. Can we be far away from homosexual accusations?

You know damn well if you answer the question of what state right was in jeopardy, you will blow the rest of you BS Lost Cause Myths right out of the water.

Did you bother to read the essay that I linked?

Do you have the guts to answer the question BSboy? I doubt it.

Do you have the guts to read the essay? I doubt it.

That's why you're getting super-personal with TexConfederate, trying to bait him so the mods can pop him -- telling him you're going to call the Secret Service to his house, warning him to his face, shaking your finger in his face and insulting him. Super nasty IMHO, but hey, if the mods disagree ......

Rockrr and thumper are worse than Arock and the mods should send them to join their pal non-sequitur.

It must piss you off to no end to know that Lee took communion with a freed Black man.

Now, thumper, why would that piss anybody off?

All in all, when it comes to anything “Confederate”, Lee was a much, much better man than you could ever hope to be.

Lee was a much better man than you could ever hope to be either and most of the rest of us, for that fact.

Lee would’ve shaken the hand of Lincoln,

Now, you see, this is precisely how revisionist history gets started.

Are you unfamiliar with how Lee came to despise the yankees to the point that all he would call them was 'those people'?

Yet unlike yourself, Lee was a GENTLEMAN first and foremost.

He had the class to at least TRY to get the south to realize it lost the war and stopped what would have been a further massacre of the Confederate troops and people.

Not that I expect you to see reason or anything but whatever history you conjure up behind your keyboard, and I truly can’t wait until you assail my conservative credentials (LOL) because I won’t go in lockstep with your wannabe-ism.

Your opinion. Plenty of people here on Free Republic Know that I am a staunch conservative. Including the one man who counts. So that makes your opinion worthless. Just like yourself.

“Governor, if I had foreseen the use those people designed to make of their victory, there would have been no surrender at Appomattox Courthouse; no sir, not by me. Had I foreseen these results of subjugation, I would have preferred to die at Appomattox with my brave men, my sword in my right hand.”

Mike:

Nobody doubts your conservative stance. What you need to realize is that one can still be a Southerner, disagree with you and others regarding the causes of the war, detest Lincoln, and STILL love this country, and be a Good Republican.

And that is historical nonsense. You are projecting backwards. The same time that Calhoun was pushing nullification and secession doctrine he was also pushing internal improvements -- i.e. Federal spending for roads and harbor improvements.

Concurring bump.

Toombs makes it quite clear later in the same speech that there were vital Southern interests involved with territorial expansion...at least for slave owners...and they wanted their slice of pie.

"In 1790 we had less than eight hundred thousand slaves. Under our mild and humane administration the system they have increased above four millions. The country has expanded to meet growing want, and Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Missouri have received this tide of African labor; before the end of this century, at precisely the same rate of increase, Africans among us in a subordinate condition will amount to eleven millions of persons. What shall be done with them? We must expand or perish. We are constrained by an inexorable necessity to accept expansion or extermination. Those who tell you that the territorial question is an abstraction, that you can never colonize territory without the African slave trade, are both deaf and blind to the history of the last sixty years. "

Just for the record, I KNOW your conservatism. You are not Marxist. We may disagree, about WBTS, but I respect you.

I happen to think it is important that we get it correct.

Won't be possible since the wrong side won.

While I do regret the time I wasted in my youth pursuing radical politics, I did learn far more about them than you could possibly begin to know. I know how they think and what they would do, without a moments hesitation. They are ruthless and they just love to see the views of a Confederate cabal aired.

We'll never shut up. No politically perverted ex-Marxist is going to either. You should shut up and learn some real conservative values; like how we got into this Federal Dictatorship and how to get out of it, the solution is called STATES RIGHTS BTW. You are very crude and ignorant little ex-red diaper doper baby.

I can tell you, as a life long conservative who WAS NEVER A LEFTY, your brain is STILL warped, you have a long way to go to full recovery.

PS: As far as I can tell Free Republic is not AA for recovering lefties. Being an ex-Marxist is nothing to be proud of, really. It's kind of like somebody saying there are an ex pedophile. I am not calling you a pedophile, it serves only as an example of the SAME KIND of abomination. Flush your red turds in private, make your peace.

Speaking for myself, I am not giving you any brownie points for being an ex Karl Marx follower. I would say at best you are RINO.....Hurts, doesn't it?

IMHO that is the only way to be a good American.

PS: These brainwashed Federal Boot lick Yahoos will never learn. But more power to you.

Exactly which post was it that gave you the impression that I or anybody else doesn't realize that the South lost the war? (You need to quit hitting that bong so hard.)

Our differences of agreement with you yankee neo-cons is your blind adherence to a revised history that was designed and written to ensure that the South would forever be the nations whipping boy and the north, with it's powerful centralized government, it's savior.

nd I truly can’t wait until you assail my conservative credentials

I maintain that you're not a conservative because if you were you wouldn't approve of constitutional violations by the federal government, an unlawful war that included crimes of humanity against non-combatants and a powerful centralized federal government running roughshod over the states.

because I won’t go in lockstep with your wannabe-ism.

Pal, I'm come to realize that you and your buddies are nothing but provocateurs constantly spoiling for a fight where none should exist.
