Don't spin the Civil War
Washington Post ^ | 12.27.10 | E.J. DIONNE jR.

The Civil War is about to loom very large in the popular memory. We would do well to be candid about its causes and not allow the distortions of contemporary politics or long-standing myths to cloud our understanding of why the nation fell apart.

The coming year will mark the 150th anniversary of the onset of the conflict, which is usually dated to April 12, 1861, when Confederate batteries opened fire at 4:30 a.m. on federal troops occupying Fort Sumter. Union forces surrendered the next day, after 34 hours of shelling.

Did Lincoln not say that he would not allow slavery to expand? Yes, he did. That is interference in the right to own personal property. This doesn’t mean I agree with slavery, I am simply pointing out that there was a valid issue.

That seems a tad bit hyperbolic, don’t you think?

How are any of us supposed to rat out someone to the SS? “Oh Mr. SS man, there’s a meanie over there at some website saying stupid and pig-headed things!”

Really?

Like I said, the mods seem capable of clearing a room if necessary. If you have a concern, AND IT’S REALLY A CONCERN, then why aren’t you appealing to them?

“That’s why you’re getting super-personal with TexConfederate, trying to bait him so the mods can pop him — telling him you’re going to call the Secret Service to his house, warning him to his face, shaking your finger in his face and insulting him.”

I’ve done no such thing. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Texas was a state. IN THE CONFEDERACY, after February 1861.

Straight out of the Democrat play book. When I oppose Obama Care, I'm a racist. When I oppose gay marriage, I'm a 'Homophobe' -- what ever the f' that is. If I oppose SALT, I'm a war monger.

And when I demur from Northern triumphalism and mythology, I've got a burning, unquenchable desire to own human flesh and ravish brown girls in my stables, my tottering ego to inflate. Blah.

Physician, gaze in thy mirror, heal thyself.

Liberation imposed from above, vanguard-led blah blah blah -- hey, Red historians Foner and McPherson are putting this stuff in the public magisterium of the National Park Service, and you don't smell a 'Rat? I told you who did it!! Bill freakin' Clinton!

Read your mail sometime, dude!

Lee recognized it for what it was and championed a return to normalcy as a whole and indivisible nation.

As an alternative to endless guerrilla war, yeah.

That doesn't mean he kissed the ring, pal.

Nobody did.

Show me a post where I ever said anything like that.

Can you answer the question, or are you just going to keep playing the ad hominem?

BTW. Happy New Year.

How dense can you be?

No matter how much I disliked FDR, it didn’t give me pleasure or reason to celebrate the anniversary of his stroking out. I don’t celebrate or toast the anniversary of Kennedy’s murder. Yet, it may well be a common trait for pro-Confederates to celebrate Lincoln’s murder.

Let’s not be naive. There are nameless functionaries lurking the pages of FR just looking for little tidbits to use as a cudgel against FR. Having a ritual toasting to the murder of a president every year is just one more arrow in their quiver.

They will no doubt use such loose lips BS to their own advantage, someday, somehow, some way. That is a tactic the Left uses to full measure.

While I do regret the time I wasted in my youth pursuing radical politics, I did learn far more about them than you could possibly begin to know. I know how they think and what they would do, without a moments hesitation. They are ruthless and they just love to see the views of a Confederate cabal aired. It works to their advantage.

The sooner you realize that, the better off you’ll be.

Nobody gives a DAMN whether the Feds in 1861 recognized it or not. Secession was a fact. And don’t you DARE to bring up Lee....you are not fit to wipe his boots.

It must piss you off to no end to know that Lee took communion with a freed Black man.

All in all, when it comes to anything “Confederate”, Lee was a much, much better man than you could ever hope to be.

Lee would’ve shaken the hand of Lincoln, had not your hero shot him in the back, like a yellowbellied coward.

:-)
