Don't spin the Civil War
Washington Post ^ | 12.27.10 | E.J. DIONNE jR.

The Civil War is about to loom very large in the popular memory. We would do well to be candid about its causes and not allow the distortions of contemporary politics or long-standing myths to cloud our understanding of why the nation fell apart.

The coming year will mark the 150th anniversary of the onset of the conflict, which is usually dated to April 12, 1861, when Confederate batteries opened fire at 4:30 a.m. on federal troops occupying Fort Sumter. Union forces surrendered the next day, after 34 hours of shelling.

awwwww......

Are you unsure of your own manhood?

Does the wifey snicker at your “equipment”? Do you fear those prancing dudes and their effeminate ways?

It IS Texas for which the joke about steers and queers was concocted......and I’m very certain you ain’t sporting horns or a nose ring, Barney.

When you’re uncomfortable with your own humanity, it’s a psychic narcotic to own another human being. Those who stalk and beat their spouses have much in common with the Confederate mindset. It’s no accident that the stereotype of the wifebeater is a drunk redneck with a beer-gut and a sleeveless t-shirt.

I suppose you rejected Ronald Reagan, a former Democrat and SAG leader.

Of course, you align yourself with someone who celebrates and applauds the assassination of a US president.

Tell me, which president would YOU play J W Booth to?

I would like to remind you that the Texas Articles of Secession have been displayed in the Rotunda (in a place of honor) for YEARS....

Monument to the Confederacy on the front lawn.
Statues of Lee, Davis, and Albert Sidney Johnston on the UT Campus....
I wonder why that is.....Hummmmmm

Could be that most patriotic Texans are proud of their soldiers that fought for the Southern Cause.

Is there a statue of John Wilkes Booth....or is your hero, to whom you raise a toast every year, considered to be a villain.

Nope, it is what it is. I guess you spend all your time in .50 beer joints. Travel to the Caribbean Islands or Florida in the summer. Then(if you can afford one) you will see Mojitos all over the place because it’s cool and refreshing in the heat. It was one of Hemingway’s favorite drinks. I didn’t know he was a fag. I feel sorry for all those wives he had when he was really queer because he like Mojitos.

I can tell you’re really upset about your troll pal NS. You’ll get over it, there will be lots of new trolls for your to play with and befriend during the 2012 campaign.

Is that your MO, to try to call everyone a fag? I think the only one on this thread is YOU~!

Cuban Mojito recipe

the original authentic recipe from Havana Cuba

1 teaspoon powdered sugar
Juice from 1 lime (2 ounces)
4 mint leaves

1 sprig of mint
Rum (2 ounces)
2 ounces club soda

There are countless recipes for the Mojito (pronounced moh-HEE-toh), but this version is for the one Hemingway himself enjoyed at the Mojito’s place of birth: La Bodeguita del Medio in Havana, Cuba.

Place the mint leaves into a long mojito glass (often called a “collins” glass) and squeeze the juice from a cut lime over it. You’ll want about two ounces of lime juice, so it may not require all of the juice from a single lime. Add the powdered sugar, then gently smash the mint into the lime juice and sugar with a muddler. Add lots of ice (preferably crushed) then add the rum and stir, and top off with the club soda (you can also stir the club soda in as per your taste). Garnish with a mint sprig if desired.

I’ll bet your favorite color is pink.

Actually, that is my daughter’s favorite color and my wife is partial to it as well. Blondes look good in pink. My favorite color is blue.

You came to FR in 2001 and your first posts prove you are an ill tempered, old, argumentative, jerk. Don’t reply to me again, or ping me, you are irrelevant and on my ignore list.

With that being the case, were those “liberal yankees” correct in 1860 when they proclaimed slavery to be an evil and morally bankrupt institution that must be eliminated?

Put that question to the God of Israel, who dictated the first five books of the Old Testament directly to the minds of his prophetic servants one letter at a time, as the rabbinical teaching has it.

Ask Him. He was the one who gave moral instruction to the Children of Israel on the subject of bondage.

And when Texans visit their capitol building in Austin, they will also see a statue of Sam Houston and they will learn of how Sam Houston was opposed to Texas joining the Confederacy. Upon reading about Sam Houston these Texas will think about how wise and strong he was.

And they will also see monuments to those Texans who favored secession and they will think to themselves how misguided those men who decided abandon the United States in order to maintain slavery in Texas.

And when the walk out onto the South steps of the capitol building they may see a “Texan” holding a sign that reads:

“My only complaint is that Booth wasted good Southern Lead on President Lincoln”

“I open champagne every April to celebrate!”

And they will shake their head, walk away while wiping a tear from their eye and explain to their children that yes, there are “Texans” who celebrate the assassination of an American president and are proud that Texas abandoned the Union so that they could continue to buy, sell and trade human beings, force them to toil in the cotton fields while treating them worse than a half-decent person would treat an animal.

Unlike the Confederate Cultists, I learned, grew, changed, saw the light and mostly credit Reagan acolytes for their forbearance and polemic skills in helping me overcome my erroneous ways.

Which translates to: the Lincoln blow up doll was more satisfying than I could ever have imagined....

The only real compliment that I can give the Lincoln Free Republic Coven is MOST of the time they actually read our sides posts. However, your imbecilic rants seem to prove otherwise.

This is what I said:

Booth made him a martyr, that was a stupid thing to do.

I can't image the Coven isn't a little embarrassed by your juvenile ill informed rants.

That’s rich coming from someone who admitted that they used to be a Marxist. You did say that here on FR did you not?

It's on his home page, unless he's removed it.

As a 'former' marxist, thumper was instrumental in helping them achieve their goals. He must be quite proud of obamacare.

He also seems to have been warmly welcomed by his comrades; mac_truck, punkrr (who so far has been born and raised in 3 Southern states!), trumandogz, etc. I'm sure that non-sequitur would absolutely love thumper, the 'former' marxist.

One more time: slavery was the occasion. States rights was the cause. You either get it or you don’t.

What state right was in question?

Are you familiar with the 10th Amendment?

Also, see Article 4 of the US Constitution.

Those aren't answers. You are dodging.

Very simply. What had the Federal government done to infringe on their 'states rights?'

You are dodging.

Bull. You're just too lazy to do your own work.

Read Article 4 of the US Constitution and then read South Carolina's Secession Declaration.

(I would normally provide links but I'm getting tired of spoon feeding you bastards just to have you pull a non-sequitur.)

What had the Federal government done to infringe on their 'states rights?'

Read the above suggested documents plus THIS ESSAY and then get back to me.
