Don't spin the Civil War
Washington Post ^ | 12.27.10 | E.J. DIONNE jR.

The Civil War is about to loom very large in the popular memory. We would do well to be candid about its causes and not allow the distortions of contemporary politics or long-standing myths to cloud our understanding of why the nation fell apart.

The coming year will mark the 150th anniversary of the onset of the conflict, which is usually dated to April 12, 1861, when Confederate batteries opened fire at 4:30 a.m. on federal troops occupying Fort Sumter. Union forces surrendered the next day, after 34 hours of shelling.

There’s a written cadence, phrases and iteration that Non-Sequitor used that’s duplicated in Drennan Whyte’s replies.

Doesn’t bother me one way or the other that Non-Sequitor has sneaked back with a nom-de-plume. A good infiltrator and agent provocateur would’ve changed his writing style, but I’d never expect Non-Sequitor to put in that much work. Once you’re in love with your writing, it’s difficult to throw your lover - yourself - over the cliff.

Let me be the first to say it - Welcome back, Non-Sequitor...uh, Drennan Whyte. I’m just surprised you picked the name of a rebel riverboat for your new name.

I do not have to read what historians of the 21st century write about the 19th century. Instead, I read the actual documents that were written during historical events.

Therefore, when I read the Declaration of Independence, I can understand why our founding fathers declared independence.

And when I read the Declaration of Secession by the states of South Carolina, Texas, Georgia and Mississippi, I can see exactly why they opted for such action.

These states told us that the reason for leaving the Union was because they desired to keep human beings in slavery.

Interestingly, on this thread, I have not seen a post where the supporters of the Confederacy have disavowed these Declarations of Succession.

Society certainly changes over time.
Having an illegitimate child, interracial marriage, homosexuality, etc. were all shunned by society when I was a child and are now accepted as the norm. Even a divorce back then would have people whispering about you. Cigarette smokers were normal then and they are shunned, now. So just in my lifetime society has changed as to what is and what is not “moral”.

Most do not understand how the entire economy of the south in the 1860’s was so intertwined with slavery. Plantation owners borrowed money, bought slaves, cleared land, planted fields, and hoped for a good harvest so they could pay off their loans and still make a profit. Most of the rest of society (shop keepers, share croppers, cart drivers, railroad operators, carpenters, blacksmiths, etc.) either lived well or starved depending on the success of the plantations.

The economy of the northern states had no such reliance on slavery and it was easy for them to take the arrogant moral high ground on the issue. It is certainly true that slavery was one of the main issues that led to secession, but even more-so it was about “who” had the power and authority (states vs. feds) to make decisions about slavery.

Every effort was made to resolve the issue in a peaceful fashion, but Lincoln would have none of that. If Beauregard hadn’t lobbed shells at Fort Sumter, there would have been some other flash point, Lincoln would have seen to that. The war was about secession, not slavery.

Yeah, you would consider yourself other than American first.

Kind of like those idiots who Balkanized themselves and resorted to sectarian violence in southern Europe. That’s a great “philosophy” you adhere to.

So, we now know you’re undependable and cannot be counted on to even defend the United States of America because you’re “a Texan first.” Heck, maybe you’re one of those Timmy McVeigh types who bomb children and imagine yourself some sort of heroic freedom fighter. Did you cheer when the dirtbag muslim scum shot down American soldiers in Texas? I’ll bet you had a little smirk on your face...what with those Federal troops stationed on Texas soil. How dare they!

Not American; Texan.

You and your Confederate ilk are more traitorous than you’d like others to believe. You place region in front of nation. You might as well make it official, renounce your citizenship and leave this nation to truly patriotic citizens.

Confederate.

Out of all the posters here, I find you most confused. You’re hootin’ and hollerin’ for southerners to get the hell out of America.

Let me tell you, boy, many of these southerners proved themselves well in WW II, Korea, Vietnam and today, in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In Okinawa in 1945, the Marines and Army landed. They fought like hell to take that island. At one hill they took, a captain from Alabama raised a rebel flag and his men gave a good rebel yell.

Do you have a problem with that? I sure don’t and I’m from Michigan.

You’re trying to start a fight where none should exist. Pull back your horns and welcome your southern brothers.

We’re on the same team.

This Civil War thread is a debate, not an opportunity to wish your fellow citizens to go to hell.

If alive in 1864, thumper would have been happy in Sherman’s Army torching, stealing and laughing his way thru GA and SC, in the proverbial Rape to the Sea.

Projection on your own part, bubba.

YOU are the oddball out. The one who separated himself from his “fellow Americans”.

Rest assured that admission, so proudly made, will not be forgotten.
