Although the focus of this book is on the efforts of the American OSS to exfiltrate downed allied fliers from the Balkans, the story would be impossible to tell without a rather detailed discussion of Mihailovich and an accurate portrayal of the backdrop of Balkan politics against which all these events took place. This book offers a very good account as to how soviet sympathizers in western intelligence tried to smear Mihailovich and prop up Tito even if it meant sacrificing the downed allied fliers and the OSS men sent to rescue them.
It's a well written (true) war story, spy novel and historical/political analysis, and also recounts the postwar grass roots efforts taken by a lot of the OSS agents and rescued fliers to try and bring international attention to Mihailovich's kangaroo court trial after the war. Of course Tito had him executed, but in 1948, at the urging of Eisenhower, Truman awarded Mihailovich the Legion of Merit. The award was kept secret until 2005 when it was presented to Mihailovich's daughter.
