Last word on Terri Schiavo...

For all of those who have called me every imaginable name because I dare to suggest that there are some things worse than death...I don't wish you on you anything that poor woman goes through on a minute by minute basis. Because you know so much, and are so sure that you are right because you are all so freakin self-righteous...I'm leaving FreeRepublic because I no longer want to be a part of something that has become so twisted. Hannity is right, this website has been hijacked. It was a good run...but we'll find another place. Save your jabs, I won't be reading them. To those who have privately agreed with me, and there are many, thank you. I'm just worn out and frankly, don't even care what most here think.

It certainly has been 15 years that that Terri Schiavo has been fed exclusively through the feeding tube. The gastric feeding tube was place by a Dr. Pothen Jacob while Mrs Schiavo was in Humana Northside Hospital very shortly after her cardiac arrest. The idea that Michael Schiavo ordered it is a fiction. The tube was not placed for the convenience of the nurses, it was place so that Terri could receive sustenance.

Where do you get the idea that Terri was eating by mouth after her collapse? Aside from a non-verified anecdotal statement that one of her care givers fed her a small amount of jello and some sips of apple juice and orange juice, nowhere in the medical record does it indicate that Terri has eaten by mouth since the morning of her arrest.

Additionally, Terri has failed every swallow test given to her as is reported in the official court record.

"The feeding tube is inserted only at mealtimes. The court has repeatedly failed Terri and I don't know why. Judge Greer being legally blind may have something to do with it as he can't read briefs. I guess they're read to him."

The feeding tube is surgically implanted and is a permanent fixture. It is not "inserted only at mealtimes".

Judge Greer is "legally blind". This doesn't mean that he can't see. He he can read with prescribed glasses but he cannot drive. Despite his visual handicap, he is a well respected and admired Judge of the Sixth Circuit Court.

I know you read that here all the time, but it is absolutely false - as are a zillion other rumors spread as fact.

Terri's tube was put in at the advice of doctors before she even left the first hospital (Humana), because after her collapse, she has *never* had the ability to swallow food on her own without choking. Tasting and swallowing a bit of jello is not the same as trying to eat.

She had 3 of the highest quality (barium) swallow tests done in 1990, 91, and 92, which showed she could not swallow without choking, even though she could swallow her saliva - it's a reflex like you do in your sleep. Hammesfher's saying, "If she can swallow saliva, she can be fed and swallow on her own" is... an irresponsible thing to say, at best.

(I do think they should give her another shot at therapy and re-test her now, though.)

Regarding Judge Greer... He could be blind as a bat, but the 2nd district court of appeals went out of their way and actually re-viewed the videos, the testimony and other evidence of the 6 doctor trial and said they found the same as he did.

I've seen nothing but guesses that says she is on Medicaid. He did get 300k award for his loss, but Terri's $ is in a trust fund and there is still some left.

BTW- Terri's husband (I think this is true) decides to pull the plug after he got lots of money for a malpractice suit where he said something like he'd never abandon her.

She collapsed in Feb 1990.
He got the awards in November '92.
He petitioned the court to appoint a guardian ad litem to decide about pulling the tube in May (or march?) '98.

Some perhaps, but not much. Last I heard, when George Felos and Michael Schiavo appeared on Larry King, there was about $50,000 left.

Oh. Thanks. I had heard my comment somewhere in the news. That's why I said "I think this is true" and used general terms. Was that what BSF was getting on to me for? If my comment was non-factual then I applogize. Still, I tried to make people know I wasn't certain.

I am so touched by the kind words of my friends here. In the seven years I've been posting, this has been the most heart-wrenching subject I've been involved with. And I didn't expect such a response... on both sides.

I pray the right thing happens for Ms. Schiavo. But also for her parents AND HER HUSBAND. They are all innocent victims and human beings trying to do what they think is right. After all, isn't that what we aspire to do?
