Well crap. I guess I need to take down all those Van de Graaff Generators I've been putting up. I was just gonna use a static charge to repel space dust. They are configurable, so you can actually make them into a funnel to attract dust in sizable quantities if you need reaction mass or a new atmosphere.

Speaking of which... What's the dome made of? Will it withstand a certain amount of puncturing? Self sealing layer maybe? What would be the largest "hole" that could be put in it and still seal properly? If it is an "armored" clear composite material, how big a hit can it take before it shatters and how would we repair it?

Thinking on this from several layers. One, micrometorite bombardment will be a problem. Especially once we are up to speed ourselves. Two, I ain't going anywhere without my bang-bang collection. Consider 'em a security blanket for me. Noone is really sure what is gonna happen to the Zombies once we hit orbit.

You shouldn't need all your stuff.

Since in outer spaace, outside means you need a spacesuit, you won't even need a winter coat.

You won't need pots and pans or cookware, unless it's your hobby. Anyone living in the cell rooms would be there only for sleeping, study and/or entertainment, and other private functions. Most other activities would be in the community.

Of course, families would have a different arrangement.

Are the walls thick enough that you can't hear the stereo from the people next door? I once lived in a dorm where the walls (ceilings, floors) were so thin, you could hear the people upstairs when they punched the buttons on their touch-tone phone.

"Oh, Amy's calling her boyfriend again! That means we'll have to listen to them bicker for the next two hours ..." Once I aimed my stereo speakers to the ceiling and turned on a Wagner tape at full volume.

All the dorm rooms should be insulated. The rest of the rooms, tower hot tubs and what not, aren't. I think I mentioned that back when we were discussing the dorm layout and internet/home theater capabilities.

Most repairs are designed to consider replacing the entire composite pane. This can be done in minutes by a trained repair crew.

The panes (designed something like automobile windshields, only thicker and more multi-layered) are in two parts, and are set up to be replaced from the inside and the outside. Outside work is especially rigorous. (Note: All repairs on the underside of the enclosures are done from the outside.)

The most serious kind of repair is that which bridges a strut section. For this, a special crawler is moved into place to cover the hole from the outside, while the replacement metal is put back into position, and then the glass panels emplaced.

One technique we use is that when a meteorite punctures both panels, an adjacent section in the same sub-group can rotate into place, and then the struts will close off the interior to minimize air-loss. After the automatic reaction, the repair crews replace all broken panels, and check for other damage.

We have sufficient atmosphere to make up for losses, and we can manufacture more oxygen from carbon dioxide or water-ice we discover in our travels. Nitrogen we would have to make up as best we could, but it shouldn't be difficult.

As for your bang-bang collection, the shooting range is in that swampy area to the left of the main gate as you exit. Keep your aim low, and shoot along the axis of rotation to avoid coriolis effects.

We've got full range surround in each room. Access to a central media library. Movies and music. Main Hall converts to a full theater/concert hall. 3D holographic surround. Bottom end is subsonic, upper levels beyond human hearing. one whole section of the maincourtyard wall converts to a hi-def screen.

Pretty much anywhere you go in the castle that has a terminal in it will connect to the Inter/tranet work we've got via optical cabling. Time lag to Earth will still apply, but we are working on a quantum entangled link. Not sure if we ever got that one running, but it'd cut the 15 minute light-lag to Mars down to nothing.

Rooms are insulated. Not just for sound, but enviromentally as well. Since we'll be headed into space, we've converted everything up to compartmentalize the various living quarters into redundantly contained units. If we ever lose the main dome, or enough of it to be a danger, anyone inside the castle would be protected. Anyone caught in the forest or out in the open would be screwed unless they could make it to a maintainance tunnel or one of the sealed off cave entrances. Not all of them are airlocked at the surface. The dwarves insisted on that one. I just think they've got a thing against doors.

Many of the dorm room walls are made of solid rock, from six inches to a foot-and-a-half thick, but so-called "wet" walls, which contain plumbing pipes, are of standard construction, with extra insulation for sound absorbancy.

You should not be able to hear your neighbors, but cannon-fire sounds from the courtyard, and Sionnsar's "serenades" will come through the tiny windows and air vents.
