Power Outage Shuts Down 911 Center 6:24 a.m. EDT July 20, 2004
Charlotte-Mecklenburg County's 911 emergency call system was offline for more than an hour early Tuesday morning. A power failure caused the system to shutdown at about 4 a.m.
Emergency telephone calls to 911 were redirected to Medic. Dispatchers at Medic handled emergency response for the county until about 5:40 a.m.
During the power outage, lights at the 911 center ran on a backup generator. The department was using a homeland security policy to switch to a backup 911 system. That switch was cancelled when the power was restored.
There's no word on what caused the power outage.
