Roman Catholic leaders in Austria called an emergency meeting today after officials discovered a vast cache of photos and videos allegedly depicting young priests having sex at a seminary.
About 40,000 photographs and an undisclosed number of films, including child pornography, were downloaded on computers at the seminary in St Poelten, about 50 miles west of Vienna, the respected news magazine Profil reported.
Officials with the local diocese declined to comment but were meeting privately on the scandal, Austrian state television reported.
It said the seminarys director, the Rev Ulrich Kuechl, and his deputy, Wolfgang Rothe, had resigned.
The Austrian Bishops Conference issued a statement today pledging a full and swift investigation.
Anything that has to do with homosexuality or pornography has no place at a seminary for priests, it said.
Church officials discovered the material on a computer at the seminary, Profil said. It published several images purportedly showing young priests and their instructors kissing and fondling each other and engaging in orgies and sex games.
The child porn came mostly from web sites based in Poland, the magazine said.
Bishop Kurt Krenn, a conservative churchman who oversees the St Poelten Diocese, told Austrian television he had seen photos of seminary leaders in sexual situations with students. Krenn, however, dismissed the photos as silly pranks that had nothing to do with homosexuality.
A group of St. Poelten Diocese officials planned to ask the Vatican to remove Krenn as bishop, Austrian radio reported.
Vatican spokesman Ciro Benedettini told the Austria Press Agency that the Holy See had no comment.
Krenn, 68, issued a statement calling the accusations groundless while conceding that he may have made some wrong personnel decisions at the seminary.
"Try this: debate the facts and arguments."

Too late!

"Aren't you an SSPXer?" = the surest sign that they have lost the debate.
Phoenix on the other hand never had one until five weeks ago and I think we are in pretty good financial shape.
I only comment because I am all for connecting dots and think facts are of utmost importance if we are to win this battle. So at least in Arizona there is no connection between the Indult and bankruptcy, unless it's an inverse correlation.
ZING!
Hey, you guys just keep shooting these guys' false arguments and lies down as fast as they set 'em up. How mean! Why don't you go write some poetry instead? THAT would stand up for the truth much better wouldn't it?
I didn't take your astute comment to meant that you believe the heresy that the minister somehow affects the efficacy of the sacrament, but that you don't want certain special hands getting anywhere near any of your bodily orifices.
EEEEeeeewwwww! The special sicknesses that such hands might SINK you into. What a horrid thought! I'm having nightmares about it already and I haven't even gone to sleep yet! (shudder!)
"Ask the Mods to rule. They'll most likely pull the thread."
1. Thread makes the lavender liberal modernists and "special" priests look bad.
2. A certain special someone thinks that pulling the thread would be a good thing.
3. Things that make you go "Hmmm..."
I agree the money should be monitored,I always take off all monies I have to spend on books and conservative newspapers and magazines and conferences I attend because the church has been remiss in teaching truth. But to advocate cutting off all money is self defeating, can you come up with a more reasonable plan?
It is widely known and well documented that JPII, Thatcher and Reagan knocked the evil empire to its knees. That one is beyond reasonable debate.
"1. In the strict sense you may fulfill your Sunday obligation by attending a Mass celebrated by a priest of the Society of St. Pius X."
"2. We have already told you that we cannot recommend your attendance at such a Mass and have explained the reason why. If your primary reason for attending were to manifest your desire to separate yourself from communion with the Roman Pontiff and those in communion with him, it would be a sin. If your intention is simply to participate in a Mass according to the 1962 Missal for the sake of devotion, this would not be a sin."
Sincerely yours in Christ, Rev. Msgr. Camille Perl Secretary Pontifical Ecclesia Dei Commission
After Christ tells Peter about getting old and that others will dress him and lead him where he does not want to go,He tells Peter that what he must do is follow Him. That is;Peter must follow Christ. And as Catholics,we have believed that the Pope speaks for Christ on earth and we should listen to him and follow his lead. It makes me wonder about a lot of things.
For some, it is FUN to be hurtful and slanderous and to bear false witness.
For others, that would just be sinful.
Your picture proves nothing. It is easily interpreted by those with two eyes. Look at the position of the crucifix. Your attempt to make Padre Pio a "supporter" of the Vatican II/New Mass mess is an old, tired ploy refuted many times over by people who were present at that Mass.
You wouldn't by any chance know the Stephen Hand or Peter Vere crowd? Have any other screen names?
HERE we are in agreement.
Pio X did not issue his warnings about Modernism for nought. There were problems long before V.II, but the flagrant abuse of the Council's documents and recommendations, combined with a general 'defining deviancy down' in US society (observed by Daniel Patrick Moynihan in the early 1960's, IIRC) led to the critical-mass reaction you describe.
Narses tends to throw bombs once in a great while. Some on this forum are concerned that SSPX sentiments color one's judgment, and 'attachment' to SSPX is not a good thing.
Gorby was not a player until it was all over but the shouting.
Your summary is inadequate--you write the Iron Lady out of the scenes, and somehow determine that Solidarnocz had nothing to do with JPII and his allies in the Polish Heirarchy.
Summarily, read the history. THEN comment.
