"Having been for sixteen years a witness of his labors, I have pursued the history of his life and death with all fidelity; and I now unhesitatingly testify that every true Christian may find in this man the noble pattern of a truly Christian life and Christian death; a pattern, however, which it is as easy to calumniate as it would be difficult to follow."

- Theodore Beza (Calvin's Successor)

"The old truth that Calvin preached, that Augustine preached, that Paul preached, is the truth that I must preach to-day, or else be false to my conscience and my God. I cannot shape the truth; I know of no such thing as paring off the rough edges of a doctrine. John Knox's gospel is my gospel. That which thundered through Scotland must thunder through England again."—C. H. Spurgeon

"The strength of that heretic [Calvin] consisted in this, that money never had the slightest charm for him. If I had such servants my dominion would extend from sea to sea." -- Pius IV (Pope at the time of Calvin's death)

"I believe Calvin was a great instrument of God; and that he was a wise and pious man. But I cannot but advise those who love his memory to let Servetus alone."

Ohhhh, John Calvin!

The doctrines of original sin, election, effectual calling, final perseverance, and all those great truths which we called Calvinsim - though Calvin was not the author of them, but simply an able writer and preacher upon the subject - are, I believe, the essential doctrines of the gospel that is in Jesus Christ. Now, I do not ask you whether you believe all this - it is possible you may not; but I believe you will before you enter heaven.

C. H. Spurgeon

Geerhardus Vos, the Princeton New Testament scholar, asked the question in 1891, What is it about Reformed theology that enables that tradition to grasp the fullness of Scripture unlike any other branch of Christendom? He answers, "Because Reformed theology took hold of the Scriptures in their deepest root idea. . . . This root idea which served as the key to unlock the rich treasuries of the Scriptures was the preeminence of God's glory in the consideration of all that has been created" (see note 6). It's this relentless orientation on the glory of God that gives coherence to John Calvin's life and to the Reformed tradition that followed. Vos said that the "all-embracing slogan of the Reformed faith is this: the work of grace in the sinner as a mirror for the glory of God" (see note 7). Mirroring the glory of God is the meaning of John Calvin's life and ministry.

B.B. Warfield...

Calvinism is evangelism in its pure and only stable expression, and when we say evangelism we say sin and salvation. It means utter dependence on God for salvation. It implies therefore, need of salvation and a profound sense of this need, along with an equally profound sense of helplessness in the presence of this need, and utter dependence on God for its satisfaction. Its type is found in the publican who smote his breast and cried, "God be merciful to me a sinner!" No question there of saving himself, or helping God to save him, or of opening the way to God to save him. No question of anything but "I am a sinner, and all my hope is in God, my Saviour!" This is Calvinism, not just something like Calvinism, or an approach to Calvinism, but Calvinism in its vital manifestation. Wherever this attitude of heart is found and is given expression in direct and unambiguous terms, there is Calvinism. Where this attitude of mind and heart is fallen away from it however small a measure, there Calvinism has become impossible.

The Calvinist, in a word, is the man who sees God. He has caught sight of the ineffable Vision, and he will not let it fade for a moment from his eyes--God in nature, God in history, God in grace. Everywhere he sees God in His mighty stepping, everywhere he feels the working of His mighty arm, the throbbing of His mighty heart...Calvinism is just Christianity. The super-naturalism for which Calvinism stands is the very breath of the nostrils of Christianity; without it Christianity cannot exist...Calvinism thus emerges to our sight as nothing more or less than the hope of the world.

Those who are behaving like modern-day Pharisees continue to bash, trash, persecute, and post their false accusations on threads they have hijacked for that purpose.

When you delete all the falsehoods, there is nothing left to respond to.

That unrepentant misbehavior rates a post here. Their contentious falsehoods should be spamming one of "their" threads instead of a thread comparing Saddam's fate with the fate of Nebuchadnezzar.

They will be brought to stand before a just and merciful God, and will have to acknowledge to their shame that they have been fighting against Him and His Church all this time.

Their misbehavior is unjustified against the Lord's Church and against churches they suppose are false, so they are left without excuse. The Lord has not sent them to bash and trash. The Lord has not sent them at all. Ye may know this by their fruits, which are contention, false accusation, persecution, etc. They should exhort all to come to Christ in all meekness and humility.

It won't be a very happy day for them, unless they have repented by then.

The people must be very vigilant against guys like this, for if they persecute us, they will persecute you. They must never be entrusted with public office, for they will shred the Constitution they profess to uphold. You may know that by their misbehavior on this forum.

I exhort them to forsake all this natural-man behavior, come unto Christ, honor His birthday, which we celebrate at this time of year, and learn of Him, that the Lord may take their heart of stone from them, give them a heart of flesh, that they may be born again.
