i contacted Gateway tech support and they sent me some umpteen mile long list of things to try, most of which i didn't understand. i unplugged the cable modem and plugged it back in, i removed the panicware and window washer software that i had just loaded in the past week, to cope with the popup crap that has been assaulting us at home. and i ran the norton virus scan, and updated it, and they said they have 2 files in quarantine, and they made me do something called RESCUE DISKS. i would say it is maybe 10% better than before i did this stuff, but still not fixed.
