HONEST ABE DAY

http://www.netins.net/showcase/creative/lincoln.html His life was what America was all about. An average boy, born on this day in 1809 on a farm in a log cabin in Hodgenville, Kentucky, was able to become the 16th President of the United States.

He studied hard, by the light of a fireplace, to become first, a lawyer, then a statesman. Abraham Lincoln, one of the most revered U.S. Presidents, served his country during one of the most turbulent times in its history. The term of his presidency (1861-1865) encompassed the Civil War between the States. His Emancipation Proclamation made on January 1, 1863 to free slaves; and his Gettysburg Address given on November 19, 1863 at the site of one of the most famous battlegrounds of the Civil War are still held high as classic statements of democratic beliefs and goals.

President Lincoln was also responsible for one of the most popular holidays in the U.S.: Thanksgiving Day. He proclaimed that the last Thursday of November shall be observed as such. And so it was, and still is.

Abraham Lincoln lived during tragic times and died a tragic death. While watching a performance of Our American Cousin at Washington’s Ford Theatre, he was shot by John Wilkes Booth and died a few hours later. Lincoln was the first U.S. President to be assassinated.

‘Honest Abe’ earned his nickname when he was practicing law in Illinois. It was his unfailing honesty that made him known throughout the state. When convinced that his client was right, he could argue the case strongly. If not convinced, he was hardly powerful in his client’s defense. Lincoln would persuade clients to settle out of court even though that meant he would receive a lesser fee. And, when this was not possible, he could argue a case equally as well before a judge or before an uneducated jury. To Abe Lincoln, being a lawyer or President meant seeking the truth for client or for country.

Is anybody here? Someone must have locked us all out, perhaps for getting too wild on Bit's birthday.

We just got back from a Valentine's dinner at my parents' church. The youth pastor had a running gag through the entertainment portion, trying to sell duct tape at ever increasing prices for its many uses. There was some good talent on tap tonight and we had fun.

I had to get tough with the tech support people at our ISP. They replaced a modem for us last Friday, but it took three conversations with them to get them to see that what they replaced it with is inferior. Sure, they saved us money, but we lost a lot of quality. Finally though, through my threats, they agreed to replace the modem with the original model with no extra charge for more labor. That brings our bill for me forgetting to unplug the phone line during the storm up to about $110, a mistake I hope I don't make again. At least Mrs. Mulliner is proud of how I got tough with them.

testing, 1 2 3, is this thing on?

Congress has just passed legislation outlawing liberals. The bombing begins in five minutes.

Could we have a moment of silence for the three missing posts (#257, #258, and #259)?

What was scary is that I had no problem spelling it .sdrawkcab

And knowing it was right. ;>)

Yours is actually easier to read because when my baby sister and I were young, we often shared books head to head, swapping right-side-up every other page turn.

for the three missing posts (#257, #258, and #259)?

Two of them were mine, I think. So don't worry about the content. They were vaccuous, as my posts normally are. ;>)

I have an idea you're going to get more silence than you want ...... LOL!

I have at least one post floating out somewhere in cyberspace but it was a re-posting of something that finally did show up. Tomorrow there will probably be a whole lot of extra posts that are missing tonight.

Paging Art Bell. Paging Art Bell.

Message particularly for east coast FReepers living in or north of North Carolina.

SPECIAL WEAX INFORMATION---

Prepare NOW for possible major nor'easter Friday night - all day Saturday - and much of the day Sunday.

A complex system will be forming and moving through the mid-Atlantic, New England areas.

Specific forecast discussion for the KLWX (Sterling, VA) area makes mention of the following storm attributes for the Northern Virginia, panhandle of West Virginia, Maryland, and District of Columbia:

Friday - snow beginning. Several inches possible.

Saturday - snow, possibly mixing with or changing to rain. If there is a changeover to rain, it will be because of a warm layer between about 2-5K feet off the ground. Below 0C air at ground level through event, however. Potential in this instance for significant icing. Change back to snow by evening in any event. Several more inches possible overnight Saturday.

Sunday - snow, ending by midday.

NO "TP" RATING YET, BUT - STAND BY.

Hi Kay...

Bit... Is it still your birthday?!!!

Happy Birthday, Mate!

I was watching a PBS special... I know... I know... about America at War, in color. I started watching it, as the photography is fabulous. All done in color film. It is narrated by Martin Sheen, and about half way through it I became so disgusted with the divisive way America is treated. If you watch this, you're lead to believe that we all are racist, and selfish.

This is not the America I learned about from my uncles, aunts, parents, and grandparesnts, who lived through the war.

Can't these idiots do anything right?!!!

It is just maddening to listen to Martin Sheen pontificate how racist this country was, when we saved western civilzation from nazism, and imperialism!

We were not perfect, but we did a hell of a lot more good than bad during this time.
